I'm using diald (0.99.1) on Linux with a 2.2.13 kernel. Like other
people I was getting these messages in /var/log/messages when diald
started:

Nov 4 14:47:53 tonyh modprobe: can't locate module tap0

and similar up to tap15, but the connection is successful. I thought
maybe I should enable Ethertap in the kernel, so I enabled the options
relating to it and created the /dev/tap0 device. But that made it fail
with these messages:

Nov 4 18:00:01 tonyh diald[384]: Calling site 192.168.65.8
Nov 4 18:00:02 tonyh chat[478]: Can't get terminal parameters: Invalid
argument
Nov 4 18:00:02 tonyh diald[384]: Connect script failed.

The first message is normal on successful connections too, that address
is the "remote" in diald.conf.

So how should I get rid of those tap module messages?

Also, when it loads pppd, it complains:

Nov 4 18:15:13 tonyh modprobe: can't locate module char-major-108

Presumably I need to alias that to something PPP-related, but why aren't
these things documented?

Then when diald closes the link it complains again:

Nov 4 18:20:41 tonyh diald[383]: Closing down idle link.
Nov 4 18:20:41 tonyh diald[383]: start sl0: SIOCSIFMETRIC: Operation
not supported
Nov 4 18:20:41 tonyh pppd[475]: Terminating on signal 2.
Nov 4 18:20:43 tonyh diald[383]: start sl0: SIOCSIFMETRIC: Operation
not supported
Nov 4 18:20:43 tonyh diald[383]: start sl0: SIOCADDRT: File exists
Nov 4 18:20:43 tonyh diald[383]: start sl0: SIOCADDRT: File exists
Nov 4 18:20:44 tonyh diald[383]: Delaying 10 seconds before clear to
dial.

(I've snipped some intervening info messages from pppd).
