How about just opening a browser and downloading a large enough file
from somwhere --- e.g, use Netscape's Smart Download -- and watch the
status info as the file streams in.

Or, run dctrl on your Linux Gnome desktop. (From an Xtem window,
"dctrl -fifo /etc/diald/diald.ctl &") It'll give you lot's of info
about your connection.
