A solution I've used in the past is to use cron to pipe commands to the
diald.fifo at the appropriate times. You can "echo force >
/var/run/diald.fifo" (or wherever your fifo lives) when you want it nailed
up.  Then use "unforce" to return to demand mode.  The other commands are
the "block"/"unblock" pair for preventing/restoring demand dialing, and
finally "up"/"down" to manually connect/disconnect.
