Are you using pppd-2.3.10 ??
I had the same problem under slackware 7.0,
Try noauth on the options file (pppd)
Check the man pppd
pppd operate in differnet form when you are changing the default route
Manual dial only add a new default route , while diald is changing from tap to
ppp (I think)
