A few basic comments...

Use 'require "getopts.pl"' to process commend line options.  It make for
much more elegant code.

Indent your code.  I don't care what you do for your own personal
scripts, but you will have fewer problems if you indent things properly,
and it is MUCH easier for other people to look at it.

if you use vim, see ':he cindent' and ':he ='
