You need the development include files in addition to the compiler. You'll
have trouble compiling most programs without them. At a minimum you need
the two I'm listing here.
glibc-devel-<version> (2.1.2-11 I think is shipped with RH 6.1)
kernel-headers-<version> (2.2.12-20 is the RH 6.1 updated version)
