This is covered in the documentation that comes with diald. Unfortunately
Mike Jagdis does not distribute diald in rpm form and not all the rpm
packagers include the documentation in their packages.
Diald 0.9x uses ethertap devices in preference to slip devices. (There are
many reasons why it's preferable.) So if your kernel supports ethertap
(yours does) diald will try and use them first and then move on to slip if
an ethertap device is not found.
If you want to enable ethertap then add the following lines to
/etc/conf.modules
--
alias tap0 ethertap
options -o tap0 unit=0
alias tap1 ethertap
options -o tap1 unit=1
# you can continue for units tap2 through tap15
# if you like, but usually only the first is needed.
--
Some machines have trouble with ethertap devices in use if a control fifo is
not also defined.
