i suggest looking at the HOWTO documents.
in most distributions, they reside in /usr/doc/howto.
if you don't have them on your hard drive, they can be
obtained from http://linuxdoc.org
i suggest you start with the networking-howto (sometimes
called net-3-howto). this will point you to other sources of
information.
there is also a document called HOWTO-Index. it has links to
all howtos together with a brief description of their
contents.
