Marc,
I don not know anything about the Rocketport, but if it acts like a serial port
and has a device associated with it, it should work. Maybe someone else on the
list has some insight.
As for your problems talking to the modem. What does your /var/log/messages
indicate is happening. It sounds like one of the required modules/kernel items
is not confiugred. If you are using the tap devices they should be built as
modules and the following should be in your /etc/conf.modules file:
alias tap0 ethertap
options tap0 -o tap0 unit=0
I had to include an alias for net-pf-17 like:
alias net-pf-17 af_packet
I also had to specify the following for some of the later kernels:
alias ppp0 ppp_async
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
You probably have the latter ones set up correctly since you can manually invoke
pppd.
Diald will try to use the sl0 (slip) device if you do not have tap devices
configured, it would have to be included in kernel too.
One other thing, your connect script cannot start pppd, diald will do that. The
connect script you use for your manual dialup will not normally work with diald
(i.e. ifup ppp0).
