Since I'm experiencing the same problems as Aaron here discribes I can say
that /dev/ttyS0 in my case won't make a difference. I have been going through
the archive of this mailing list and it seems to be a problem with the 0.99.1
diald version shipped standard with SuSE and RH distributions. Maybe switching
to 0.99.4 will have a possitive effect, but I would like to know if there is a
SuSE build rpm of this version available. This since the laptop I build this
diald router on seems to break the binaries when compiled.

Have you tried using /dev/ttyX instead of /dev/modem in the diald.conf?
