Thanks for all the help!

It appears that I had two problems:

1) I needed to add the "noauth" option to /etc/ppp/options file (Thanks for the
tip).

2) I had the "lock" option in both /etc/diald.conf and /etc/ppp/options files. 
I removed the entry from /etc/diald.conf.

Boy, I didn't realize how much I depended on diald until it broke. I have a
cron entry that checks my mail for me every 1/2 hour, and it won't work without
diald!
