In you diald.conf file, you should change the connect stanza to include the
/usr/sbin/chat command since your script is not standalone. Also, add the
following line to your diald.conf:

fifo /etc/diald/diald.ctl

I assume the directory /etc/diald exists. You can pick another directory if you
wish and any file name. This line enable diald to create a fifo required for
use with the dctrl program. Also, it seems it help to circumvent a problem with
open files resulting in an error message in the /var/log/messages while diald
is trying to execute the chat script.
