I think I have a similar set up to what you want. The modem is on the Linux
box running diald. I've also set up IP Masquerading on the Linux box.
Now if I set the Default gateway on the other PCs on the network (Win98 /
BeOS) to the Linux box, they can all access the web for browsing / e-mail /
etc. The Linux box uses Diald to route the traffic to the web. (You must
also set up the DNS entries for your ISP as well)
Get diald working on the Linux box first. This shouldn't be too difficult,
but comes down to getting the diald.conf right. I can e-mail my diald.conf
if necessary, but it is based on the example for ppp in the diald howtos. If
you get problems with not locating module tap0, check out the archives, I
seem to recall it was a common occurrance and easily fixed by a couple
entries in conf.modules.
Then add IP Masquerading. I found an excellent howto on this on Josh's Linux
Guide whilst looking round the Linux Journal web site. It took a few moments
to do.
www.local.net/~jgo/LinuxGuide
Under SYSTEM, item 10 the last time I checked.
It's running on RedHat 6.2 at the moment, but I have used RedHat 6.1
successfully. I don't know about other distros, but had to add "echo 1 >
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward" in the rc.local file before the IPCHAINS
stuff. I actually got a prompt telling me do this when I hadn't.
I think you may be optimistic about a couple of hours. Diald took me a
couple of days the first time. Now I've done it (and saved my diald.conf),
it only takes me a few minutes.
