Solved my own problem... for anyone else with this problem, here is what I was doing wrong:
in all my attempts to get this working I had configure "Bt87x Audio Capture" to compile into the kernel Device Drivers -> Sound -> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture -> PCI devices -> <*> Bt87x Audio Capture This SHOULD NOT be compiled into the kernel if you want the VP-1020 to work!
