I agree with you that a hardcoded comparison is not a good solution. However, especially in case of problems with the driver (during development, when using a new/untested I2C interface, etc.), it _is_ useful to check if the firmware is really running. At least for TDA10046, the DSP ready bit in the sync status register is not 100% reliable...
