Matt,
The interface to the IDE hard drive is simply the 16 bit
ISA bus plus a couple of chip select lines. I have designed
a circuit to allow 8 bit microcontrollers such as the 80c188,
80c51, and Z80 to use the 16 bit IDE drive. The basics of
the IDE interface are in there and you would eliminate the
latch business to have straight through connections.

Somewhere I have a schematic for an old AT IDE
interface card that I reverse engineered to figure
this stuff out. The card was completely built around
74xxx stuff. If you are interested in this schematic
let me know and I will try to dig it up.
