I have purchased an M-Systems 8MB ATA-Flash pcmcia card. My laptop does
not recognise it properly. It makes a high pitched beep followed by a
low pitched beep. I assume I have to format the drive but I don't which
device to use. I've tried /dev/hdb, /dev/hdc, /dev/hdd, etc but none of
these work. I think there must be something wrong at the card services
level but I don't really know.

contents of /var/log/messages :
... cardmgr[245]: initialising socket 1
... cardmgr[245]: socket 1: ATA/IDE Fixed Disk
... cardmgr[245]: executing: 'insmod
/lib/modules/preferred/pcmcia/ide_cs.o'
... cardmgr[245]: kernel: ide_cs: GetNextTuple: No more items
... cardmgr[245]: cardmgr[245]: get dev info on socket 1 failed:
Resource temporarily unavailable.

The card manager obviously recognises that it is a fixed disk and loads
the ide_cs module.

output of "cardctl ident 1"
    product info: "M-SYSTEMS", " ", " "
    manfid: 0x0000, 0x0000
    function: 4 (fixed disk)

Does this look valid ? Should there be more info in the product info
strings ?
Should the manfid be all zeros ?

Do I have to specifically put this card in the /etc/pcmcia/config file ?

There is no ide.opts file. Do I need one.

Has anyone got some sample files for ATA flash disks I can have a look
at.

Thanks,
Brendan Simon.
