You can also spawn a getty on a serial terminal and then run gdb locally on
the target machine.
Of course this assumes that:
    1. you have sufficient memory and storage on the target device
    2. you are debugging kernel code that executes after the system is fully
initialized

If you don;t want to actually spawn a getty then you can also just redirect
a shell to the serial device.
I've done this directly from "/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit" in the past.
