The Moto FADS 860 board is definitely buggy and shouldn't be used as a
referrence hardware design. They've left a number of CPU pins floating
and the bdm port on the board works by pure luck. If you take out the
CPU that comes with the board and you put in another cpu (different
mask or date code), chances are the bdm port will not work. I don't
know what else is buggy in the hardware but I would recommend you pick
a different eval board. By the way, there's another Motorola
referrence design, I think it's called "SAMBA", or something like
that, which is also buggy. If you end up making your own board, pay
very close attention to all the CPU signals, including BB (Bus Busy),
and make sure you don't leave anything floating (as the FADS and SAMBA
designs do) which shouldn't be.

On the software side, just my personal opinion, I think $6k is cheap
considering you're getting all the cross-compiling tools, kernel, and
other software all done for you and you can be up and running in an
hour, plus you'll be getting support for a year. Of course, my
opinion is very subjective...
