I have done a lot of reading lately on journalling fs's lately since
I want to begin to implement on my machines. I don't ever recall a
reference that claimed that the journalling system protected user
*data*. I would be interested in seeing where these claims are being
made.

Journalling systems aren't anything new. All the big iron systems
have had them for a long time now. They are just new to Linux.
Linux journalling systems don't claim to anything that the big iron
systems aren't already doing. Infact IBM's JFS *is* exactly the same
since its just a port.
