According to my experience a jornaling file system does not protect 100% from a system corruption on a rw-media. Think about a ramdisk to run linux in and mount /usr readonly. Your mini-distri looks quite interesting. Perhaps you'll post in this mailing list when your distri is ready? I am very interested.
