In most cases it is safe to have something like Busybox' "press enter to
activate this console" feature on local terminals (e.g. the serial port),
when only authorized people are able to come close to the device and know
how to attach a terminal :-) For network access it is absolutely necessary
to have at least a password mechanism - better something cryptified like
SSH. Even if people today do not assume they connect their field devices
to the internet: it is possible and it will be done in the future, trust
me.
