I had the same problem with XFS and kernel-image-2.6.8-fai_1_i386.deb.

XFS seems broken with this kernel, nobody seems to be using XFS and
FAI on Linux 2.6. :( I have no idea where this can come from because
when I recompiled my own kernel with the same configuration to add an
ethernet module I needed, XFS worked.

Maybe 2.6.8-fai has been compiled on a buggy OS (weird gcc, or
something...).

For your information, kernel-image-2.4.27-fai_1_i386.deb works fine
with XFS; I'm now using it for my installations.
