mkinitrd.yaird is called in the postinst from linux-image-2.6.15-1-686 {,-smp} from backports.org (and, IIRC, in the versions in etch and sid, too.) I don't know why the initrd needs to be built in the postinst, and I couldn't care less, but apparently that's how things work. I just wrote a hook to mount /sys before software installation starts, but I feel I shouldn't be the first to encounter this problem. (Don't expect to hear back from me this week, I'm away.
