If you wait a bit you normally can get patches. On the machine I have
access to all the old tarballs I don't have enough disk space.
Therefore I ask for patches in the announcement and within a few hours
I normally get them.

I couldn't reproduce it when you first described it and I cannot do it
now. What does readelf report for the versions in libnss_db.so.2? It
should look like this:

Version needs section '.gnu.version_r' contains 3 entries:
Addr: 0x001128 Offset: 0x001128 Link to section: 3 (.dynstr)
  000000: Version: 1 File: libdb.so.3 Cnt: 1
  0x0010: Name: GLIBC_2.1 Flags: none Version: 5
  0x0020: Version: 1 File: libnss_files.so.2 Cnt: 1
  0x0030: Name: GLIBC_2.0 Flags: none Version: 4
  0x0040: Version: 1 File: libc.so.6 Cnt: 1
  0x0050: Name: GLIBC_2.0 Flags: none Version: 3

My guess in any case is that the binutils are not adequate. Get HJ's
last version, announced in many places.
