   Please not that I've linked the test program using shared libstdc++:
   g++ -Wall -o test test.C
   on a glibc-2.0.7 (stdc++-2.8.0) based RedHat 5.2 and tested on a
   RedHat 6.0 (glibc-2.1.1)

Can you post a gdb backtrace of the failing strstream test program?
