Hi all,

I'm new on this list and up until now I have been programming C++
exclusively on Windows platforms. Now, I find I want to learn how to
the same on Linux. My head is currently swimming with loads of
strange notions - I know next to nothing about UNIX but I'm slowly
picking it up. Can anyone recommend some good (on-line) texts that
cover migrating your programming skills from Windows to Linux? I'm
sure loads of people have been doing this!

I have the 2.8.1 distributuion of GCC (it was installed with Linux)
and I can't figure out how to tell the compiler what default
include/lib directories to use. I know how to provide, say, an
include directory using the -I flag, but I want to set some defaults.
For example, after copying the standard C++ library headers (such as
<string>) onto the machine, gcc cannot find them unless I specifically
use the -I flag. How does it know where to find the standard C header
files?

Is it okay to ask question this basic on this list?

Best regards,
Ben Miller
