Its not that I have a preference for one or the other - I'm just trying to find out why the existing one is broken and whether its broken for everyone or just for the hardware version you have.
Apart from that I'm willing to try and convert it to python. As I've noticed something else, using perl implies that you need openssl modules installed for perl so python would be a more user friendly option.
