The function that send out that mail does:
mail -s "$1" "$email"  <<EOF
$Subject

Command line was:
$ARGS
EOF

Did you ever try that?
What was the result?
Is the MTA of the cluster installed and configured correctly?
Does this include perhaps the use a of smarthost?
Is the MTA configured on ALL nodes, so does the mail command word on ALL 
nodes?
What do the log files of the mailserver (the MTA on the node and ALL other 
mailservers) say?
