Just to be the devils advocate for a moment, what about a SCSI device?

There is a serial device class for SCSI. It would need to have a controller
of some form to handle the SCSI bus and delivering data to the serial
devices.

It would be entirely practical to have up to (I think, I have not got my
SCSI spec copy to hand) 16 serial channels on one SCSI address. All the
pain of interfacing with the PC bus is on the SCSI adapter card.

Yes there is a cost in the controller board but the serial devices could
be on nice simple little boards.
