I agree with him that Linux is a very good and sensible choice.

I cannot help with the DRSI cards. Maybe they could work as some sort of
SCC card, I have not done that personally. You should get it working with
the kernel AX25 services, first of all.

If the users prefer FBB, stick to it. JNOS and others cannot service
unproto requests and is an entirely different mailbox style. Don't make
your users angry. FBB can provide services that JNOS does not, and users
tend to like that. I prefer FBB for AX25 forwarding, as it resumes and
does all that needs to be done, and well. It has a YappC and Autobin file
server. FBB accepts other "servers", like zipped downloads, automatic
7PLUS as mail to users, etc. I like very much the possibility of having a
"daemon" reading ALL mail for offensive words and phrases, via a m_filter,
to keep it all a only ham service (no CB) with acceptable wording, also
use 7pfbb to capture passing 7PLUS and review it, and additionally fill
your fileserver after review. JNOS is unable to do it all like that.

There is candy for you too. You may install JNOS along, sharing the same
radios and TNC's. I have done it several times, and it does work. For
ax25, I use net2kiss to link the JNOS kiss ports to the kernel, and a slip
link to the kernel. Works great !

I use the same /fbb/users directory as /public for JNOS, and you may
download either ASCII, Yapp, YappC, and Autobin from FBB, and FTP or
uuencoded fron JNOS. If you open a telephone port, FBB could service
X/Y/Z Modem...I have not done this yet.

I install one more port than the amount of radio ports. This one allows
FBB and JNOS to "talk" to each other. Actually, JNOS is not only providing
TCPIP, but also digipeating, crossport digipeating and another netrom node
besides LinuxNode 0.2.4. JNOS runs its own TCPIP stack, I use a 44 net
address on JNOS, and you may use any other address on Linux. You can
always configure interfaces with a different IP address. You also may use
JNOS as DNS server for other JNOS if you have a link to a live DNS
service.

I believe any kiss TNC may work well with kissattach. You need to do a two
channel pty, it is documented in the AX25 HOWTO, I have never used a dual
port TNC, but seen from Linux, a KPC9612 or a KAM is the same thing. As
far as I know, HI8GN is using a KAM succesfully, you might ask him. There
are others, of course, doing the same "acrobatics".

With a bit of work, all that is possible.

Hope this helps. Craig, write directly to me if you want more specific
help.
