Maybe Bob has run a drop lead, as in

     RT-----------T-----------TR
      PC | PC
                  |
                  |
                  |
                 PC

(where he says "but when I take one of them off on one of the machines and run
another thincoax with bnc connector to it").

This is not supported and will ruin the network. Just think about the
standing waves (SWR etc) on the cable created by the huge impedance bump.
