If only it were that simple ... Unfortunately, in their infinite
wisdom, Winmodems have been so lobotomized that some of the hardware is
no longer on the board. Noticed that "HSP" designation on most
winmodems? Stands for "Host Signal Processing" - fancy way of saying
that particular part of the modems job has been shunted to your CPU.
And that part of the job is the biggest part of a modem's job. In
essence, a winmodem is no more than a slightly modified soundcard.
Nearly all the modem specific hardware has been removed. That's why
they're so cheap. Literally *and* figuratively.

Mike Westall corrects Mike Westall:
Upon further review of Metrolink's Web site one finds:
"At this time Metro OpenGL only has software acceleration.
A hardware-accelerated version is in development now and will be available in
the
coming months. The current target is end of 1998. Please see the Press
Release section of
this site for more information.
All owners of Metro OpenGL with software acceleration will receive a free
upgrade to the
hardware accelerated version when it is available.
Since the video card market changes rapidly, it is not possible to determine
which specific
cards or chipsets will be supported for hardware acceleration at this time. "
A collaborative effort involving Precision Insight and Red Hat is announced on
the
XFree Web site but availability appears --WAY-- out.

I read about that. I just hope the Navy learned its lesson. I
believe the motivation for the switch over to NT was that the Navy
wanted to get away from custom one-off hardware and software and move
over to stuff they could get "anywhere". Somehow, the brass seemed to
overlook the the minor detail that the Navy's needs are one hell of a
lot different than the needs of someone running a business.
Maybe they should try Linux. ;-)

What is your actual billing (ISDN, time on line, etc) on a monthly
basis. Here in the US, you have to pay an arm and a leg (something
like US$60/month) for the service, it isn't that great, and it is not
available in some areas.

Hi,
has anyone managed to succesfully install one of those new "Intuos"
graphics tablet from Wacom? (I have the A5 size, that is 6"x9").
I have tried everything with XInput (after having read all the docs I
have found around) but still it does not work; I suspect the newer
tablet are not perfectly compatible with the driver, or maybe I am
doing something wrong...
If anyone is using an Intuos tablet under XFree86, can (s)he e-mail me
some info, maybe his/her XF86Config ?
Thanks,

Subject: kernel: attempt to access beyond end of device
Date: Sun, 27 Dec 1998 23:15:40 GMT
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone knows what these errors may mean. They are from
/var/log/messages and it looks like the problems started happening when our
nightly backup started (its backs up stuff from other machines on the network
on one of the 12GB RAID drives first)
This is Red Hat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36 with SMP support) which has 6 RAID disks
with the total of 24 GB, split in 2 filesystems:
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/sda1 303251 178868 108722 62% /
/dev/sda5 3664445 1046288 2428592 30% /usr

/dev/sdd1 12291139 5484463 6168111 47% /ndx3 <== RAID
it looks like something thinks there is more disk space than there really is
on those RAIDs....

Thanks for the feed back.I was told by Mylex that *all* the BT-952
boards come with RAID now. They also come with VHDCI external connectors
(also known as
SCA connectors) which means I can not use my old MD-50 cable.
I use Granite Digital cables and the cable for the KT-952 cost $129.
I also had to flash this KT-952 to an older BIOS - Mylex tech
support said that doing this fixes problems that many users are
having. The software that came with the board would not work
and Mylex tech support said that this was a known problem.
I guess I'll wait for Mylex tech to get back (Jan 4, 99) but sofar
I am underwelmed by this controller.

Well, I have 2.0.36 and the Audio PCI (1370) works fine, so does the
1371 at work. However, I cannot get any midi for the life of me. I have
an external synth plugged into the soundcard; but I'm not sure whether
the sound card actually has a hardware MPU-401 or not. It seems that it
doesn't. Has ANYONE gotten the midi on an Ensoniq Audio PCI to work
under linux?

Is anyone running 2.0.x with an AMD? I have an intel P233 now, I am
considering switching. Is the K62 worth getting?
Also, it seems my kernel's already been "optimised" for intel 586 ...
will it boot if I plug an AMD in, or should I recompile first?
