I have a philips scanner A600 (A4) on my parallel port.
I've checked the SANE documentation but I was unable to find
out a driver for it.
I don't think it's even recognized by my kernel.
Do anyone have the same or similar scanner and have solved
this problem ?

I'm running Linux on an idot system. There were lots of problems. The
modem idot sold me is a winmodem although they had said it shouldn't be.
Basically any modem under $60 is probably a winmodem.
The graphics card was an i740 based card unsupported by xfree although
there is a free server available from redhat. There was also a
commercial server that I was ready to get when I found the free one.
The sound card is not supported even by the commercial OSS version. The
moral is that you have to really check out everything and my impression
was that I wasn't able to do that before I bought. The web site was not
very helpful or informative about what the system actually came with.

If you're really selling Linux machines you may want to put up a

You should check what your system sees, before attempting
every /dev/sd?4.
You shoud type 'dmesg', and check lines like these
scsi0 : Adaptec 152x SCSI driver; $Revision: 1.7 $
scsi : 1 host.
Vendor: IOMEGA Model: ZIP 100 Rev: E.08
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi removable disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 5, lun 0
scsi : detected 1 SCSI disk total.
here sda is my zip disk partition, so my mount command is:
mount /dev/sda4 /zip
you should place a -t option for the filesystem type.
However I guess you could spend a couple mins to read your
Zip howto.

yes, you can mount your CDR drive as a std cdrom drive (RO).
If you are asking if you can simply type
# cp myfile.txt /mnt/cdr or something similar, the answer is NO.
But you should read CD-writers HOWTO for some useful hints:
if can create an empty 650Mb image,
mount it as loopback, copy whatever you want on it,
and then burn it with a software.

well, you can use modules to have it work, yes.
I cannot guarantee it works in the first 5mins,
without any tuning, however mine did.

My plextor (SCSI) works really well under linux,
You should check the compatibility list of the 2 programs
used in linux: cdwrite and cdrecord.
I don't know if these programs are in the SuSE dist, but
they certainly are.

If it helps any, you're not alone. I actually had this working properly
with my PCI Cirrus 5434 (2 Mb) adapter on my first install of SuSE 5.3 -
the resizing and position shifting I did with SaX was "kept". Now,
after reinstalling last night (due to another problem), it _won't_
"stick"; no mater how well I shift and resize the screen, amd even
though /etc/XF86Config gets updated; when I restart the SVGA X Server
with 'startx', the screen is right-shifted about 3/4".
MSWin95 is installed on this machine, but I haven't booted it in the
last six months, so it's probably not a factor (;-).
Any clues or hints appreciated...

Subject: Need help with partitioning problem.
Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 22:06:27 -0500
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I was trying to install Mandrake and RedHat from my second
hard disk. I had it set as a fat32 extended dos partition
(drive g). I had c through f on my first hard drive.
I defragged the drive 2 disk and shrank the fat32
partition to 1.2GB with Partition Magic 4 (in Win98).
Then made the difference a partition with Linux file
system. Also made a swap area with PM4.
Then I tried installing RedHat. I then erased and created
partitions with Druid. Over and over again. I eventually
erased all the Linux partitions with Druid. Thinking I have
a clean disk, I was going to expand the fat32 partition again.
But when I fired up PM4 this time, I get a "Partition error
#113". I look error 113 up and it says:
#113 Partitions overlap
The hard-disk partition table contains erroneous values. If
data partitions overlap, writing to one may destroy data in another.
This error is sometimes the result of an OS/2 FDISK bug. If free space
exists within the extended partition, OS/2"s FDISK program allows a
primary partition to be created that overlaps the extended partition.
A logical partition is subsequently created in the space occupied by
the overlapping primary partition.
If a primary partition overlaps the end of the extended partition but
does not overlap any logical partitions within the extended partition,
the problem can be remedied by patching the partition table.
WARNING! Only qualified individuals should attempt this repair.
An incorrect patch could destroy all data on the hard disk.
============= end of error 113 =================
I go to DOS and try running FIPS. I've never run it, but
wanted to see what it said. It gave the warning:
The drive contains overlapping partitions. This is a serious
problem.
I ran FDISK. It said some numbers that weren't correct. I
don't remember what they were.
What should I do. The fat32 (drive g) at the moment is having
no problems with reading and writing from Windows or DOS. I
have no way do back up the files on this drive.
My question is what caused this? And can I fix this crossed
partition problem without losing any data?
Also, I should be getting a CD of RedHat in the mail in the
next couple of days. Should I just leave things as they are
and try to install RedHat properly on this disk the way it is?
Thanks for any help. If you could email me, I would appreciate
it. My ISP changes news servers on the fly. I might miss the
reply. Thanks again.

Date: Thu, 7 Jan 1999 10:12:13 -0500
I have a Maxtor 5.7 GB UDMA drive installed as primary master, LBA mode and
PIO Mode 4 enabled in the BIOS. It's currently set up as a single NTFS
partition and works fine under NT. When a I try to boot Linux from a floppy
(either Red Hat's or Debian), the drive fails the partition check with the
following messages:
Partition check:
hda: hda: dma_intr: status=0x59 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error}
hda: dma_intr: error=0x04 {DriveStatusError}
If I disable LBA mode and set i/o mode to "Standard" in the BIOS, I can boot
the kernel. However, when I boot NT with those settings, my drive
performance takes a nosedive.
The UDMA HowTo offers the boot parameter ide0=dma as a solution to some UDMA
problems, but it doesn;t help in my case.
Can anyone offer a workaround for this situation?
Thanks,

what a long thread, only the long-ass rendition 3300 threads were as
long, usualy due to long-=ass discussions and flames about other
chipsets and OpenGL/DirectX/Prorietary and messed up Glide wackos.
now as to this thread, here goes.
seems as if LILO put itself on its own HD, meaning that it didn't edit
the Primary hard Drives Master Boot Record. as evidenced by the fact
that it worked with the Linux drive as master on Primary IDE.
If I understand it when you reversed the drive locations you couldn't
get NT to boot, well maybe you didn't reconfig LILO to find NT as hdc.
For a solution. Put Linux as hda and NT in hdc and Using LILO to boot.
another thing is to make sure LBA and 32 bit transfers enabled in BIOS.
The size of the Physical disk does not matter because of the way the
extended file system format works.
FYI- the 1024 limit does not affect Linux in Primary partition. Only
effects LINUX in partition seperate from DOS.
but keeping the Kernel seperate has its advantages.

I would highly recommend getting the 3COM
Etherlink III 3C509b-TPO card. That's the one I use (its an ISA card), I love
it. It's not too expensive and works very nicely in Windows
and in Linux. Just remember to disable the plug-n-play on the card (using the
disk they give you) before you install Linux. When disabling the pnp be sure to
enter the IRQ and I/O (you can get these in the Windows device manager). Once
Linux finds the card, I think you can safely re-enable the pnp so that you can
use the card in Windows. If you don't disable the pnp, Linux will be very
cranky. :-P
Hope that helps you!

I would say it's the X-Server you are using. It's sad to see how slow
the XBF X-Server you are using is, compared to the potential of the
card. You might want to check out www.xig.com for the demo of a real

and ... fails because of a maximum supported under 1.0 Gb (I have a
2.à.36 kernel).
I tried to find a kernel compilation option as MAX_MEMSIZE to specify I
had more than 1.0 Gb, but didn't find it.
What I'd like to know is whether:
-This is a known limitation, and in this case how could I bypass it (I'd
like to avoid changing my kernel if at all possible, but if it is
necessary...)
-There is no such limitation in which case the problem comes from my
hardware (It seems very unlikely but...)
Thanks in advance.

Whilst this obnoxious person has been winding everyone up, there has
been mention of what his ISP would think of his antics. Assuming he uses
an ISP. I just pointed my browser at www.hdtv.com and it turns out to be
a company called Image Circuits, consulting engineers specializing in
the design of digital video systems. There is no mention of providing an
Internet Service, so it would appear that he is an employee. Perhaps
the management of Image Circuits would be interested?!

Most likely, the board/processor combination won't reliably run anything
more sofisticated than DOS. I'd suggest getting a new board, from the
list of boards that AMD has tested ( http://www1.amd.com/K6/k6mbl/ )

Subject: IP Masq and ICQ (quick question)
Date: Fri, 08 Jan 1999 05:45:43 GMT
Hi,
I read from the Masq Apps page about ipautofw for ICQ. I was just wondering
if you needed different port ranges for different IP addresses or can I use
the same port ranges?
In other words,
Do I have to do this?
ipautofw -A -r tcp 2000 2019 -h 192.168.1.10
ipautofw -A -r tcp 2020 2029 -h 192.168.1.11
ipautofw -A -r tcp 2030 2039 -h 192.168.1.12
or can I do this also?
ipautofw -A -r tcp 2000 2019 -h 192.168.1.10
ipautofw -A -r tcp 2000 2019 -h 192.168.1.11
ipautofw -A -r tcp 2000 2019 -h 192.168.1.12
Thanks for any help.
