Hi folks,
I've installed the new kernel 2.2.2 recently. Everything seemed to work but
today I noticed that my printer won't print.
lpdPLP is running fine, using lp0, but when receiving a print job it says:
lp: Print_open: cannot open /dev/lp0: Operation not supported by device
Modules parport, parport_pc and lp are loaded.
I don't have any clue what to do, so please help me.
TIA

Question: Does the motherboard have a built in video card? One of
the servers I deal with had an AGP-style board (the amount of video RAM was
selectable in the BIOS), and we had given it 4 megs. Well, with pre .36
kernels, I specified alll 128 Megs of RAM the system had. And it would hang.
Untill someone mentioned that the BIOS was taking away that 4 megs and I
changed the mem line to reflect that, it would keep hanging. Upgrading to
the .36 kernel eliminated the problem and allowed me to get rid of the mem
line.
Just a thought. It helped me out.

This chip is similar to the 3940 add-on SCSI adapter. I have the 7895
chip on my mobo and it works fine, use the aic7xxx driver. no problem.

Hello,
I'm having a weird problem with Seagate ST39173W
(firmware 6244) and Symbios SYM8751SP (BIOS 4.13).
During the initial installation, I formatted and
verified the drive. Then, the SCSI BIOS reports
for the drive C/H/S=1024/64/32, which is definitely
wrong.
Dos fdisk only sees 1024MB, but Linux fdisk reports
C/H/S=8683/64/32, which amounts to the correct
capacity of the drive. However, I want
less number of cylinders than that.
The drive works wonderfully, but I'm worried that
when I add another OS to the later half of the
drive, which is now empty, the boot manager may
fail.
Any hints?

If your using anythign fiarly recent DONT upgrade the kernel!!!
(Assuming you havent fiddled with all the other options like lilo).
Lilo is nearly always the problem... the html docs with redhat tell you
exactly what you need to do.
You need to add an
append="mem=128m" line to lili.conf and then rerun lilo at the prompt

2.14, but I dl'd the source and commented 16750 def's back in and then

I don't know why but they seem to have taken support out on the shipping
binary. You should also have kernel 2.1.53 or greater (I've forgotten
exactly which kernel so maybe just get 2.2.0 or greater).
> How does "setserial" change the external crystal?
yikes! Ok... now we need a much smarter person than me. . . All I thought
setserial did was set up the irq, io port and UART type so that comm
programs would know how to deal with the control registers on the
particular UART.
> Who is the maker of the chip, where do I get a data-sheet?
The 16750? I'm pretty sure that it's Texas Instruments but maybe they were
the ones who made the 16650. I know that it's not the same company that
made the 16550 and 16650. Pretty lousy answer.. sorry -
Oh - http://www.ti.com/sc/docs/folders/analog/tl16c754.html might be a
good place to look. It's TI's data sheet on a chip that contains 4
seperate 16750's. I couldn't find the exact chip because the designations
always have a letter like 16C750 or something of that sort..

Creative labs seems to be in the Linux-support PR mode. They have a
'coming soon' link on developer.soundblaster.com and from what I recall
they are supporting the EMU10K and the DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM products.
But like all great things, this will take time.
ATI's stance is a little more rigid. I believe they are in cahoots with
Microsoft so any laterial action might detriment their agreement with
MS. But like all great barriers, that one may fall.
HTH.

For better or for worse, the latter statement is not true, and it's
becoming less and less true. If your goal is to run Oracle, Informix,
DB/2, Sybase, or what have you, binary compatibility is essential.
(If people want to argue that that should not be the case -- that
everything should be GPL'ed and Linux should provide no help to either
authors or users of proprietary software -- that issue can be argued
on its own merits. However, that is not the current state of affairs,
and even as far as existing Linux distributions go, support for
platforms other than the x86 is spotty. For example, to the best of
my knowledge I cannot get SuSE for the Alpha.)

It's fairly easy. Kernel config: Yes for Hisax Siemens support,
yes for Hisax Support for Euro/DSS1 and yes for Hisax support for
AVM PnP/PCI. These options are certainly present in kernel 2.0.36,
they're not all in 2.2, don't know about earlier versions. You also
need "isdn4k-utils". The version I'm currently using is from a file
isdn4k-utils-3.0beta1.tar.gz. With this, you get (amonst other) two
commands: isdnctrl & ipppd.
To configure the link:
isdnctrl verbose 3
isdnctrl system on
isdnctrl addif ippp0
isdnctrl addphone ippp0 out <ISP number>
isdnctrl eaz ippp0 <Your number>
isdnctrl huptimeout ippp0 60
isdnctrl l2_prot ippp0 hdlc
isdnctrl l3_prot ippp0 trans
isdnctrl encap ippp0 syncppp
isdnctrl secure ippp0 on
isdnctrl pppbind ippp0 0
ipppd /dev/ippp0 defaultroute netmask 255.255.255.255 debug user <username> -vj
-vjccomp
To dial: isdnctrl dial ippp0
To hangup: isdnctrl hangup ippp0
I haven't got channel bonding working yet (admittedly I haven't
tried very hard but if anyone has done it ...).

I had the same problem on nearly the exact same PC. I have a
Gateway 2000 P5-100 Family PC. Disabling PnP alone didn't work for
me, either. In fact, if I remember right, PnP didn't have to be
disabled. The problem was the IRQ and possibly the address. Boot
into Windows 95 DOS-mode and run the configuration program that
came with the NIC (3c5x9cfg.exe or something like that). Reset
the card, reboot and see what happens to the IRQ. I noticed it currently
is 10 for you. When I reset the card, the IRQ changed to 11 and miraculously
it worked. Also, the address will probably be 0x210 or something
to that effect.
The 3c509b (Etherlink III TPO ISA NIC) seems to give a lot of people
this same problem. It _can_ be done. It just needs a little tinkering.
Oh, and be sure to disable PnP in your BIOS. Windows 9x doesn't need it
and Linux doesn't like it. This could also affect this problem.
