Use the Driver for the Adaptec 152x series, I found I needed to
disable parity as well. My card is located at IO 0x140, irq 10 so the
line to give to the kernel was:
aha152x=0x140,10,7,0

It'll change the moment they decide that buying out the agreement is a

Subject: SCSI BOOT Problem
Date: Mon, 08 Mar 1999 23:03:08 GMT

I have a machine with several SCSI LUN's (0-5 and 7) for the SCSI board.
The machine used to have an IDE drive as the primary boot disk. The IDE
drive died, and I added anoth SCSI drive as /dev/sda as the boot drive.
It ran fine before. Now the problem, I boot RedHat 5.2 from the floppy,
run fdisk to partition /dev/sda and the other SCSI drives. I have /,
/var, /tmp, /usr, /usr/local, /boot, etc etc as partitions also defined.
I run through the install, add everything, define the LAN, password etc.
Everything install's error free! I go to reboot the system and once the
post test completes it trys to find a boot device and pukes. I have the
MBR defined on /dev/sda. The boot partition is defined as active and the
system BIOS is configured to boot from <SCSI, A, C>.

Ok..........what am I doing wrong.

Can anyone tell me how to get my videocard running properly on Xwindows?

I'm new at this, so be patient.... :-)

I'm getting an image, but I can only get 400x300 image and the desktop

I'm running the Mandrake distribution of Linux with KDE installed.

I am trying to install Redhat 5.2 on a Compaq Professional Workstation
AP400. I can't get Linux to recognize the ethernet interface.

Compaq lists the interface as a Compaq NC3161 Fast Ethernet 10/100 WOL,
based on the Intell 82558 chipset. The I/O Address is listed as
autoconfigured.

Does anyone know how I can get Linux to recongize the interface?

Thanks,

Date: Tue, 9 Mar 1999 11:35:44 GMT

I had a very disappointing experience while updating and running RedHat
Linux 5.2. When I try to update, whenever it tries to scan (gives message
scanning for update....) it gives message 11 and unmonts the file system.

When i try to boot at a message comes " cant handle null pointer in kernel
..."and gives a lot of details which I am not able to understand them (it
gives some codes in hexadecimal form). This message also comes while I try
to give any command. But there is no fixed point where this comes.

While I run Xwindows , sometimes it gives error 111 or error 4.

I am having cyrix 233 processor and intel mother board. Linux partition is
413MB out of which 61 MB is for swapping. I have only selected packages
and have 70 MB free.

Please help me.

Hi all,

I am about to install Suse 6.0 on my P133 with a 430VX chipset. At the
moment I have 80 Mb RAM (2x8Mb + 2x32Mb).

I have recently heard that the VX chipset can't handle memory above 64Mb
very well ? (runs slower ???)

Is this right ? If so, am I going to notice an improvement in speed if
I drop down to 64Mb ?

Any suggestions / comments appreciated.

just got dsl via pacbell here. I laughed at that tiny nic they force you to
buy. I already run the DEC tulip so I wasn't about to deinstall it at their
command ;-)

a word of advice about pacbell dsl installs: INSIST that you get your
allocated end station IP addrs BEFORE (!) the installer comes out. insist on
it. you have to call a group called 'provisioning'. just tell them that you
need the ip's before the tech comes out so that you can get up and running in
a minimum amount of time.

when the tech came out he had NO ip's for me and provisioning took well over a
hour (on hold!) to get them to reserve ip's for me. what a major drag.

and also be prepared to unhook all the phones in the house and reconnect them
one by one until the 'error light' comes on. if you have powered phone things
(caller id or ans machines, etc) then that could throw the line off a bit. we
had to go thru this exercise and one phone was somehow problematic so we left
it unconnected for now.

but after all those charades, we finally got it going. 1.5meg-6meg in and
384k out. nice... ;-) and $200/mo is reasonable enough for this kind of b/w.

we'll just see if pacbell can keep the net up - I'm not betting my life on it.

I'm using a Creative Labs Riva TNT Blaster on my Linux system. I'm using
Linux Mandrake distribution (basically Red Hat 5.2 + KDE 1.1). XFree86 3.3.3
should run be compatible with all the Riva TNT graphics cards. You'll be
running the SVGA server which is kind of the generic driver for all SVGA
cards/monitors. Hopefully there will be an update with a driver/server
special to the TNT cards which will make X go a lot faster.

Yes... just get any TNT card you want.

Hi,

This afternoon someone replied to me on how to install this on the Prosgnia
486. I will give it a try this week sometime. What he said was to change
the CD to Boot now I downloaded the compaq configuration floppies to do this
but I did not want to make this puppy non-funtional. so I installed XX on
it, slow, but it works, so now. I have a bootable OS. Now I will change
the hardware configs. to boot CD to see if it clicks.

The person who recomend this was someone from Neosoftsys. Thanks it is the
only thing I have not tried.

Am currently running a K6-2 300Mhz processor with 128Mb of 100 Mhz
memory and considering
upgrading to a faster board and processor. I am pursuing a project which
will require scads of floating point
calculations on large arrays..the results of which are written back out
to disk..about 500 Mbytes worth.
So I'm looking at the new high end processors..PII/PIII and discover
this PII Xeon chip.

Does anyone have any experience with this chip? It very expensive..about
$900. A dual Xeon board from
SuperMicro with both processors runs over $2000. So how much faster is
this chip? Intel's web site
says it has a 512K L2 cache (even more expensive versions have 1Mb and
2Mb cache) which runs
at PROCESSOR SPEED .. 400 Mhz in this case. The comparable PII-400 chip
has a smaller(?) L2 cache
which runs at 1/2 chip speed. The comparable AMD K6-2 400 chip has a 1Mb
L2 cache but it is off chip
and accessed by the 100 Mhz bus.

So there you have it. Is the Xeon really worth double the PII price or
triple the K6-2 price?
As far as I can see.. the main difference is the L2 cache speed. Has
anybody seen any benchmarks
on this chip vis-a-via "comparable chips?

War dialers? Old stuff by now. But I think the idea would be to
build your own messaging system under Linux. That could be perfect.
Free OS, low footprint, minimal resources.

But I will really be interested in getting to recognize those tones
from my machine. I remember reading many (too many) years ago in
Ciarcia's Circuit Cellar about the decoding chips. Has anybody stayed
up-todate on that? Is any card around with one of those chips that
will just tell me which button was pressed?

Ummm...true IBM has AIX, but they didn't start dealing with UNIX until
the late '80s and at that time they had so little experience
*supporting* it, they had to have a major hiring just to get some UNIX
types onboard. Prior to that they were *business* oriented (Ever wonder
