www.kernel.org -- get the new kernel and when you're compiling tell it to
include the NTFS drivers. Contrary to popular opinion NTFS is no big
deal -- just a little strange. The new Kernel even has write support for
it.

I'm working ( for my job ) , on a Dual PIII 450Mhz without any pb.
System : Linux v2.2.0 with RTLinux RTL0D. (RedHat 5.2)
I've just updated the bios of my ASUS P2B-D motherboard with the
new bios release from ASUS website in order to recognize the PIII.

Check your permissions on /dev/dsp and /dev/audio.

Upgrade to XFree 3.3.3.1 and use the SVGA server. Select your card
directly (it may be in the card list, I'm not sure) or if it's not, use
the generic NVidia RIVA TNT entry. Works beautifully (1600x1200x32bpp,
77Hz) for my Asus AGP-V3400TNT, which uses the same chip.

I've got a aha1505ae (who works "fine" with the aha152x module) and a zip
parallelle.
The module ppa is declared as scsi_hostadapter. the aha152x too. In
conf.modules I can't put two alias for scsi_hostadapter.
I'd tried to put an alias for the zip:
alias block-major-8 ppa
but It doesn't work
Any Idea?

I think this is one of the areas in which OSS excells. The reality is
that the error messages are put in place by the programmers, or
"patchers". Often, the errors are ironed out in bizarre circumstances,
and the error messages tend to have the personality of the programmer at
the time the error was first conquered or identified.
Although there are standards for look and feel, for interfaces to
kernel, and a lot more, there is no real standard for the wording of
messages. So, messages tend to serve as descriptive, debugging style
messages, as much to help the programmer when he/she programs as the
user or installer ...
Other operating systems could never admit to being "dazed and confused"
even if they are. Also, it is often (although not in this case)
pointless in non-OSS to indicate the details of the fault because no-one
will be able to fix it other than the original programmers, or source
owners.
Just some thoughts on it.

Greetings, all.
I'm considering a dual Pen2 board for replacing my 440TX one.
People talk a lot about Asus P2B-D and sometimes Tyan boards,
so I guess they are considered highly reliable.
Has anybody had major success w/ 2.2.* + other manufacturer's
board? As far as I know, EPoX, SuperMicro, Tekram, and Giga-Byte
are out there. Any inputs about then would be much appreciated.

you did? i just checked it in bash and i found that -f took
precedence.
sophia(A)$ alias del='rm -i'
sophia(A)$ touch ./-f foo bar baz
sophia(A)$ ls
-f bar baz foo
sophia(A)$ del *
sophia(A)$ ls
-f
sophia(A)$
ok, let's try it in tcsh for kicks.
[jk@localhost]$ alias del 'rm -i'
[jk@localhost]$ touch ./-f foo bar baz
[jk@localhost]$ ls
-f bar baz foo
[jk@localhost]$ del *
[jk@localhost]$ ls
-f
[jk@localhost]$
> Worked there...
what are you smoking? there was never a prompt anywhere. -i never took
precedence over -f. the last option given wins.
here is what happens if i use rm -f -i.
sophia(A)$ touch ./-f foo bar baz
sophia(A)$ ls
-f bar baz foo
sophia(A)$ rm -f -i foo bar baz
rm: remove `foo'? y
rm: remove `bar'? n
rm: remove `baz'? y
sophia(A)$ ls
-f bar
sophia(A)$
hey, this time i did get a prompt. however, it does not invalidate
the above results.

Subject: Video frequencies for IBM Thinkpad 390
Date: Thu, 01 Apr 1999 12:09:25 GMT
Hi all:
I am trying to figure out how to configure XF86 on my
recently bought laptop, an IBM Thinkpad 390-200. IBM (of course)
has not helped me in finding the proper parameters, in particular
the horizontal and vertical sync. frequencies (the "of course"
must not be perceived as free of a deep disappointment).
HOWEVER, I noticed that in their support page they put some
new video driver for Win98 which should be the same for the
Thinkpad's 390 and i172x (a different model of Thinkpad). AND
on the "Linux on Laptop"
it recently appeared a posting with all the information to
configure XF86 on a Thinkpad i721. Do you think that I can
use the same settings for the i721 on my 390? I think that, if
the video driver for WIN98 is the same for both models, then
the video frequencies and all other parameters should be the
same.
Am I correct?
Many thanks in advance

The NCR will be fine. Just be sure the module exists in the kernel

Subject: Linux on laptops with TORISAN cdr_u240 24x cdrom
Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 09:26:26 GMT
The problem is rather old but I am still having it: the TORISAN 24x CDROM
cdr_u240 used in many portables is kind of buggy. It seems to not fully
comply to the IDE/ATAPI specification. As a result, it is recocknised (in
Suse and Redhat) but can not be accessed, whether at installation or
afterwards. The failure mode in the Redhat distribution is a series of resets
(about 120) and then a timeout. In the Suse distribution, system fails to
mount a CDROM with the following message: "wrong fs type, bad option, bad
superblock on /dev/cdrom or too many mounted file systems (aren't you trying
to mount an extended partition, instead of some logical partition inside?"
Although this issue is rather old, I have seen only one real answer from
Richard West dated end of 1998 who stated that a change in the file "ide.c"
worked for him. Now, in RedHat and in SuSe disribution I could not find this
file. I am trying to talk to Rich so I do not know if this solution might
work for me.
However, I do not understand the two different failure modes. I thought that
drivers for cdrom are generic and similar in all distributions. Is there
anybody out there having a laptop with the Torisan cdr_u240 who has solved
the problem at least after having installed a basic linux system from his
hard drive (that's what I have done)? By any means ? Did anybody manage to
get a working replacement from the laptop manufacturer. I have a ctx 700e by
the way. And I am not a professional in compiling kernels after having
changed source files. I would like to have the answers posted here in the
newsgroup rather having them emailed. I think a lot of people have this
problem and from my searches it s not really solved yet.

Hi!
U can't get safer than a DLT drive (best MTBF), but i'm not sure that Linux
supports it. But why shouldn't it? Stay away from DAT. Too big failure rate.
DLT4000 20-40GB (uncomp-comp)
DLT7000 40-80GB
For restoring smaller and many files DLT4000 is the fastes, but for big
files DLT7000 is the choise.
Hope this advice helps

You have to check that the card I/O address is one of 0x330 or 0x334; for some
reason the driver's authors have only coded these two on the source file, so
that if you
cannot install your card with one of them, you have to modify the source code
and
recompile.
