Unless it was already compiled with SMP support, no.
RedHat and Mandrake include kernel RPM's with SMP support, which
means you don't have to recompile.

Hello dear Dan,
i have noticed that youre' use an external scsi cable to join teh DLT drive
to the
server system. Well i had also some major problems with an external device
connect
to an Adaptec controller. In this curcumstance it's absolute required that the
cable is specified
for FAST-SCSI-II environment.
In addition, if your are use a wide-scsi device with an narrow-scsi device on
the same channel,
the 8bit device does'nt support termination power and termination.
The ADapter setup must be configured to "disabled wide-scsi negotination" and
reduce the xfer speed
to the used device adress.
I will hope that helps you.....maybe disable reset at power-on on adapter
setup

Hi,
I'm using SUSE6.1 with kernal 2.2.5 and I try to install support for my
Soundblaster16 (no pnp). How do I have to configure the kernal? Which
modules are needed. If I load the sb-module with
modprobe sb io=0x0220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x0330
nothing happens. If I load it with insmod ... there are several messages
"unknown symbol..." or something like that. I found some postings about
Soundblaster, where the adlib-modul is loaded. Do I need to load this
module?
Thanks for helping a newby.

Thank you for the help. Indeed, I have forgotten to download
alsaconf. Now it is working, both the CD player and the
Media Player, that was not working before. Still need to
run "amixer" as the KDE mixer cannot unmute the channels.

Yes use a kernel before 2.1.32.. or less than 16Mb in your system..
The problem is the 1 DMA channel limit of the newer kernels if you have m=
ore
than 16Mb in your computer. the older kernels do not have that problem.

Not true - I am using mine with kernel 2.2.6. Redhats sound config likes to set
up the dma like this:
dma=0,3
It works if you configure the dma like this:
dma=0 dma2=3

The svga driver of the XFree 3.3.3 does the job well.
Some people reported problems with earlier XFree versions.

Hi
Does anyone have any experience of using a Seagate Hornet/TapeStor 8 NS
tape drive under linux? Their web page claims that it will do hardware
compression and read after write, but it isn't clear if you need special
software to access these functions. Does anyone know if these are
available under linux - if they aren't I'll get the plain Hornet 8. Also
this drive is available with SCSI or ATAPI interfaces, are there any
advantages to using SCSI for such a low bandwidth device, especially as I
would have to buy a SCSI interface card for it? Are there any other tape
drives worth considering in a similar (about 200 uk pounds) price bracket?
Thanks

A board that has a PLX9080 talking to an FPGA, has a driver that is described
below :
if you like to see some of the basics then have a look at
http://zaphod.ethz.ch/linux/kernel-2.1
You should find the driver under drive/char/ibt.
Don't be surprised to find funny stuff in the driver.
It looks currently quite ugly because we have experimented quite heavily with
some of the features :-/.
It definitively needs some cleanup.

No, there is no winmodem software for Linux, you'll have to find a real
hardware modem instead. You can write a letter to Sidin Atlantis (or
Askey, who makes the modem), but they will not support anything but
Windows.

You should take a look at the bigphysarea patch, available at
http://www.uni-paderborn.de/cs/heiss/linux/bigphysarea.html
With this, you can reserve a continuous buffer at boot time.
It is used with some high-speed network interfaces.
