Just to add a touch of clarification to Gene's correct and complete
response... The card will probably not autoprobe (I am guessing based on
related experience). You will probably manually have to tell it the
address and IRQ with the "aha152x=0x340,11,7" line Gene correctly
identified above.

Read the Kernel-HOWTO:

Basically, install the source (via ``cd /usr/src ; tar xvzf <wherever-you-put

I was under the impression that KDE still needed to Xserver stuff and was
run from a script that starts it on top of the Xserver.

Therefore, thats why you get the "cannot connect messages" while trying to
start KDE on its own.

If I remember correctly, the location of the file that runs the script to
start KDE was in my .xinitrc file on my home directory. I think the entry in
here was "startkde" or something like that.

Can somebody please advise on how to setup an UPSONIC UPS
with debian.

I have tried the cable configuration on the UPSONIC web site but
I can't get it to work with genpowerd, powerd, upsd.

I have a feeling the cable spec from the web page is not correect as there
seems
to be no signaling to the init process that a power-fail event has occurred.

Any advice/info would be apprceciated.

Hello,

I am looking for drivers/utilities for a Seagate Tape Drive for Linux.
I used the ATAPI-IDE tape driver in the 2.2.x kernel which maps the
drive from /dev/hdd to /dev/ht0. Then I tried using "kbackup", which at
first seemed to work, but when I went to verify it said "Can not find
valid header".

What backup drivers/utilities do I need to get this setup working? I
would think that since the drive is ATAPI that any software should
work. How should I go about backing up the entire system? Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

Subject: Buslogic FlashPoint LT not recognized after RH 5.2 Upgrade
Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 18:13:14 +0200

Hi Folks!

I recently re-setup my windows system due to too much shareware testing and
so on. So when I eventually wanted to start my linux system (RH 5.2), I
encountered the LILO boot prompt wouldn't show up. I tried mounting my hard
disk (sdb5) by use of boot/rescue disks set up by rh and debian, but I
really wouldn't succeed. So finally I decided to try upgrading the system
with the Red Hat 5.2 CD. I reinstalled almost all the packages, which lasted
about 20 minutes, but when I rebooted, it read: "scsi: detected 0 hosts" or
something like that and a couple of lines later it says something like
"kernel panic: can't mount root on 08:15 ..." (I really don't know it).
Why doesn't the installation procedure set up the adequate buslogic.o
module?
If I'd find the mod on the net, could someone please tell me how to
integrate it on a boot/rescue disk or immediately into my old system.
Is there any possibility the system got totally broken? I mean, there's some
stuff I'd really like to see again...

Thanks for your time,

Philipp

Install the SVGA Xserver. Then you can Xconfiguration to set up your

You can check some commercial Xservers to support your graphic card.

Subject: KWINTV Problem: Operation not supported by device??
Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 16:43:07 GMT

I am having trouble running KWINTV with my Avermedia Tv Tuner.

Here are the particulars:

-The tuner works fine under windows.
-Kwintv Compiles and installs fine.
-MAKEDEV in kwintv Source tree is executed.
-Video4Linux is compiled into Kernel, bttv.o compiled as module.
-bttv.o module is loaded into Kernel.

When I execute kwintv, I am told: /dev/video: Operation not supported
by device. /dev/video is symlinked to /dev/video0, which has a
major/minor number of 81, 0.

As far as I've read, I'd done everything correct... why isn't this
working?!?!? If I can't watch TV under linux, I may have to quit
Linux altogether, and just return to watching TV.

Any help appreciated,
Dan.
