Have a look at the PARIDE suite - if you have a recent system you
should just be able to do

        insmod paride
        insmod epat
        insmod pf

        mount /dev/pf0 /mnt

(or whatever you want to do ...)

Otherwise, check out http://www.torque.net/parport/paride.html

I also have a UMAX scanner with uses USB for connection and a Windoze
printer HP 712c. I don't use my scanner much, so I didn't try to
configure it. You can get the driver for UMAX scanner at
ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/ALPHA/scanner/
and for all windoze HP printers, you could get the driver at

I had a problem while installing RedHat linux for the first time on my new
Dell machine which had a large disk( 12 gigs). while configuring the
partitions during installation, the linux always recoganized it as a 1024
cylider disk with a lesser space, then I found that for large disk, during
installation, I had to boot with hda= 16383,16,63. after that everything was
configured properly and there is no problem. I don't know whether this is
reuired for all machines,
check out the Linux HowTo document for Large Disk.

When I see 'v.90' in a PCMCIA modem, I get the fear that it may be a
Winmodem. If this is the case, you are screwed.

Cardmanager will send the ID string for the modem to
/var/log/messages. If you are root, or if you compiled PCMCIA-CS as
trusted and hace xforms, you can open up Cardmanager and see if it
recognized.

The reason is called DOS (for Dirty Operating System, short form of
QDOS, or Quick and D.O.S., later renamed Disk O.S. as Dirty wouldn't
sell to well). The command to make a filesystem there is, of course,
'format'.

This terminology breach gave rise to neverending confusion...

Yes.
I am using one. I was able to configure it and use it. Its great the
XServer which came with my RedHat 5.2 didn't support it, I had to download
the latest XServer. Then I used the XF86Setup program, it did a good job of
configuring it.

Last I checked 18 divides evenly by three. THere will be an odd
number of chips per bank. If it's double-sided it's very likely
two banks. Besides, I don't believe 18 is a power of two. How
could it be anything other than parity?

I think you're being a bit picky here.

>ASUS P5A motherboard, (3dm,pp,2I,1A,ALI,ATX) [whatever all that means]

The P5A's a relatively good motherboard -- but the 'relatively' is where
all of the problems seem to come in.

You see, the P5A uses the Ali chipset, and other Super Socket 7 boards use
other chipsets. These chipsets aren't nearly as stable as the Intel
i440LX/BX/FX chipsets which seem to be in direct competition with them.

The K6 is a very good processor -- the problem really is that all of the
chipsets that are available out there to exploit it, to put it lightly,
just suck. Tons of problems with AGP boards, and lots of other weird
issues you just don't hear of on the Intel chipset boards.

>AMD K6-2/400MHZ cpu

Good processor for the money.. Roughly comparable to a Pentium II - 350,
and quite a bit less expensive as well.

>64 meg PC-100 DRAM
>Samsung 6.4 Gig IDE UDMA drive.

I've heard nothing but problems with the Samsung hard drives
that were sold a few years ago.. I don't know if they've improved much
over the past couple of years, but I'd recommend that you stick to
Seagate/IBM/Quantum/Maxtor for the time being..

Why are you paying for Windows98 if you don't want it (hence the 'GAG!').
If you don't want something, then just insist to the retailer/builder that
you don't get it, and that you don't pay for it.

>Total cost with taxes is $1044.50

Sounds a bit on the high side -- considering that I can almost build the
same system for the same amount of money in Canadian dollars. Plus, if
you don't already have one, you'll need a monitor with that system as
well..

I tracked down my problem .... ;-)

I knew there was something I was missing. In minicom, using AT &F1
(hardware flow control default for USRobotics Sportster), then ATDT...
got me connected at 44400. Then, using the same AT commands in a Chat
script connects me *always* at 19200. I was very confused.

I was also using the slightly modified ppp-up scripts wich came with
SuSE6.0 (or are they a remnant of my SuSE5.3, IDK).

I was missing the [speed] parameter to pppd. I am unsure of how it
works, still, but all I know is that:

pppd debug modem lock connect 'chat -v -f chat.script'

connects at 19200 and

pppd 115200 debug modem lock connect 'chat -v -f chat.script'

connects at 44400.

This is on "setserial /dev/ttyS1 spd_normal"

Thanks for your help, though. Maybe someone could help me understand the
HOWTO's a bit better so that I know what I am setting when I specify
bauds, etc. Serial Flow control confuses me. Maybe I should start
looking at building SCSI bus controllers ;-)

I've changed the CPU on *this* machine two times in the past year.
Whereas someone else would throw their mad money at software,
I run Linux and throw it at hardware. I have a few friends who cycle
through machines at a higher velocity. They also pop up a terminal
window to type in their logons, so any of us will dial up our account

We're just hobbyists; we won't be changing our lifestyle to suit any

All you need to do is boot with a "DOS" disk and then enter the
command " fdisk /mbr"

This will write the DOS boot loader over the Lilo one.

Good luck, Bob
