I've got an old 8 bit Ethernet card from Digital, which according to the
FCC ID and to
http://www.wi-inf.uni-essen.de/~schwarze/nt/karten/net13.html appears to
be a DEC depca. Booting Linux 2.2.9 with Lance support compiled in it is
not recognized, even when supplying lilo with ether=5,0x300,0xd000,eth0
(those are the values jumpered according to the above web page).
The LEDs do not light up either.
Is there anything I could still try?

that 3c509 thing in hardware list is really the 3c509TP it's just there
is different versions of the 3c509, but they are all the same driver
wise.
I use them.. they work fine.. in any OS. Including Linux

I have 6.0 up and running but would like to add a voodoo2 card so I can
run Q3 server.
Is it hard to install a card after the system is already installed? Can
anyone explain the proceedure?
Is it easier just to reload the entire system?
thanks

I'm having a hard time getting Linux up on my new box.
OS: RH 5.2, XF 3.3.3.1
Motherboard: Intel LM440LX:
http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/lm/LM_DS.HTM
This board has an 82371 PCI-AGP bridge on it, a Cirrus CL-GD4565 AGP
graphics port, an EtherExpress PRO/100 Ethernet port, and a Yamaha
OPL3-SA3 sound system.
Oh, and it has the usual cast of characters: Two serial, parallel, USB,
floppy, dual IDE.
The symptom is:
When moving the PS/2 mouse (in X-windows), the CPU will lock up solid.
Telnet sessions into the box will die.
Switch to a serial mouse. Mouse behavour too erratic to use. System
locks too.
If I don't start up X, it will run forever.
Even with X not started, and the serial mouse active, plugging in the
PS/2 mouse will cause the system to lock up.
The system runs fine with windoze-95, but that was after loading a ton
of driver updates.
Anyone seen something like this? Any clues?
Thanks,
Gary.

Subject: Hard Drive Problem
Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 01:24:47 -0500
Hello,
Just recently I ran into problems with one of the
hard drives in my computer. I was transferring files on to my
computer when I started getting errors about not being able to
access the hard drive. Originally I suspected that it was about
to die. After running diagnostic programs on the hard drive,
which showed that I had problems on certain cylinders,
and checking that the specs for the hard drive were correct in
the BIOS, I rebooted Linux and watched the boot up messages.
I discovered that the values that Linux used for the
number of cylinders, heads, and sectors were not the same as in the
BIOS. I have two hard drives in the computer. The values Linux
used for the other hard drive matched the values in the BIOS.
This computer was to have Win98 run on it, but after numerous
attempts to have Win98 recognize the hard drives actual size, I
install Linux on it. This computer's BIOS has a problem telling
low end OS's hard drive specs. This problem didn't exist with WinNT.
Another computer was bought for use with Win98. It was for a family
member. (There is no point in teaching somebody how to use UNIX when
all they want to use a computer for is to write papers and e-mail.)
Could anybody tell me how I can manually set the
hard drive specs for Linux?
Thank you in advance!

Subject: RH 6.0 & Soundblaster AWE 32 PnP
Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 08:48:10 +0200
Ok I have following problem:
I was running RH 5.1 for quiet a while and I could use my AWE 32 after
having configured it with sndconfig just perfectly. Then I installed Redhat
5.2 and all of the sudden my AWE would freeze my system copmletely when
playing an Mp3 file on x11amp. Well I beared with it, and I waited for RH
6.0 to come out (I tried different things in the meantime of course, like
recompiling the kernel I read all the howto's concerning kernel rebuilding,
and soundblaster awe support) Well then I installed RH 6.0 and sound worked.
Then I thought I might recompile my kernel to save some memory, and boom !
My system freezes up again when I play an Mp3 on x11amp, and sndconfig
doesn't recognize my card (it didn't do it before the rebuild either, I had
to configure it manually). When I boot up the system and it tries to load
the midi module for the card it says that no sequencer is found and that the
device is busy...
Now, could anybody tell me what the heck I am supposed to do ????? I even
looked at possible ressource conflicts in the different /proc files. I must
have done something wrong in the kernel rebuild, could somebody PLEASE help
me! I would want to switch to linux completely but I can't unless I have my
Mp3's !!!
Sorry that this is so long, I'm desperate !
Thanx for any reply

yes. i recommend running a packet filtering firewall at the very
least. bob ziegler has a great site for firewall and has scripts for
both ipfwadm and ipchains. it's at
<URL:http://rlz.ne.mediaone.net/>
follow the relevant links.
the packet filtering will allow you to run telnetd, ftpd &c while
preventing anyone from the outside from hooking up to those services.

some people only have one machine. while a bastion host is nice, a
packet filter is better than nothing. and the bastion should be
running packet filtering in any event.

/etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow only affect inetd so services not
controlled by inetd bypass these. that is why i really like the
packet firewall.

finally, i would really recommend getting a back-up device. if you
make weekly back-ups to tape, a cracker break-in is much less costly
in time and aggravation. nothing beats a good back-up. it helps me
defend against the idiot attack launched from the person sitting in my
chair too!

IPADDR="24.4.162.173" <-------
You have assigned your internet /cable modem address to your eth1 network card,
that won't work.
Give your eth1 card a local ip like you have for the eth0 card.
I'll give a tough sketch of what needs to happen:
if you give eth1 an ip address of 192.168.0.13,
Then you need :
route add 24.4.162.173 gw 192.168.0.13
route add default gw 24.4.162.173
I'm probably wrong about the syntax
Just give the eth1 a local ip address and leave the gateway address as
24.4.162.173,
and maybe the startup scripts will set the default route up correctly
I hope someone explains this better, or gives the right numbers to plug into the
config files :))
The point is that you want a local ip for the eth1 interface card and use that as
the gateway out
of the machine, and the default route is a "logical route" that flows through the
hardware route.
The 24.4.162.173 is the address of the cable modem device

Subject: CDRecord problems?

Hi there,
Can some help me out with the following problem?
When I trie to record a audio cd with cdrecord (version 1.6.1 / Kernel
SuSe-6.1 2.2.5)
with the following commandline:
cdrecord dev=6,0 speed=4 -audio -nofix [audio file]
it records an audio cd but skips about 3 to 4 minutes when it starts
writing the data to the cd, the cd therefore isn't readable in ANY
audio cd player.
The problem isn't the audio file format because i've converted it with
sox
to the right format (got that from HOWTO's and FAQ's).
This really puzzles me because creating a data cd is no problem at all.
My cdwriter is Yamaha CDR400t (firmware rev. i) on a Adaptec 2920 (Aka
fdomain tmc controller)
on the same controller are a zipdrive (int.) and a teac cdrom player.
This has never been a problem when I was using Windows9x.

Thanks!
Only problem is, is at a lower level than that. I've read all that config
stuff before. what I can't get to work is the actual com port. I can't
seem to get the modem to respond through linux at all. It works fine under
Win95, but any time I make a call through cua2 or cua3, which are the only
two ports it could be, nothing happens. Cua1 and cua2 are actual com ports,
ie. serial ports at the back of the base unit, but as my modem is internal,
it should be working through cua2 or 3, should it not? I think it's
something to do with the kernel, but I don't know.
Please help.
Stephen.
