For some reason, The new isapnp that comes with RedHat 6.0 puts a
(CHECK) field into the io address settings by default. try removing
this from whatever config line you're using , i.e.:

(IO 0 (SIZE 8) (BASE 0x3f8) (CHECK))

becomes

(IO 0 (SIZE 8) (BASE 0x3f8))

Also, make sure that the port that you're trying to assign the modem to
has been configured with setserial. For some reason, RedHat 6.0 didn't
configure _any_ serial ports for me, wheras I had all ports under 4.2,
5.1, and 5.2. I also had to mknod /dev/hdi for my atapi zip drive.

running 'setserial /dev/ttyS0' reported that my uart type was 'unknown.'
I ran 'setserial /dev/ttyS0 autodetect' and it worked fine after that.
Funny that it hadn't been run during system installation.

Hope this helps,

R

Hi,

I can't get my original sb16 (CT2291) to work in full duplex mode. The
sound card is installed properly and the irq, dma's and io ports are
identified correctly.

I suspect that the application (speak freely) I'm using is trying to use

the same dma as the other application. In this case it would be
sfspeaker for the output and sfmike for the input. I tried to use the
ALSA driver, which worked after I set the Recording to 8 bit.

My question is, can I set the recording generally to 8 bit with the
driver included in the kernel 2.2.9. If not, what else can I do ?

Thanks

OK. I just picked up the New Diamond Viper V770 TNT2 Ultra card. I've

older thread that someone had gotten it working withthe old TNT drivers.
Since I've little experience with configuring X manually, I'm ot having
much luck. Can someone post the entry they have in their XF86Config file
for the card. A TNT entry should work. Thanks in advance.

Two answers to your question:

1) I am one of the KDE authors (a small one) and I don't like windows
much. I do like windows more than CDE, though.

2) If I bought Windows for my PC (if I could afford it, that is),
that may fix my need for a desktop computer's GUI.

Then again, that would not fix my need for a programming hobbie, and
that would not fix the need for a GUI of anyone else, and I feel all
kinds of nice things giving free stuff to people.

The limit is actually 1024 cylinders. Creating the /boot partition first in
fdisk will take care of this nicely. The /boot partition only needs to be a
few MB; 10 should be overkill. (I think my /boot has about 750K used.)

Hi Brian.

I've used an even older TZ30 drive with several kernal versions with few
problems. I didn't need to do anything special - the drive was detected
(as yours was) and responded to MT commands straight away. I've now stood
the drive down - the 90 meg was too small and I got fed up with the high
pitched whining.

Which USR model? I purchased a USR 56k Internal a few months after a friend

model #, but had a #2 after it)!! Being more specific will prevent any

Hello Eric,

Thanks for the info!

I do indeed have a CD drive and a tape drive on the SCSI bus.

The version of the aic7xx driver seems to have changed between SuSE 6.0 and
6.1 (v. 5.1.12 -> v. 5.1.15), so I wonder if something went wrong there.  I
haven't had a reply from SuSE yet.

Subject: Pacific CommWare Turbo Express Port 920 SOLVED

I finally figured the blasted thing out. Pacific CommWare isn't any help,
of course, beyond saying it can be done. And I didn't attract anyone who
had the answer when I posted here a couple of weeks ago (guess there aren't
too many people who'll spend $100 for a one-port serial board :-).

The isapnptools work as documented with the board. Setserial does, too,
but the magic key in the formula is the baud_base option to setserial;
the incantation that pulls this board above 4800 baud is

setserial /dev/ttyS[whatever] baud_base 921600

I did find things easier when I shut off autoconfig and auto_irq and
explicitly set the IRQ with setserial, too. So my final line in rc.serial
for my board at ttyS2 and IRQ 12 is:

${SETSERIAL} /dev/ttyS2 irq 12 skip_test ${STD_FLAGS} uart 16750 baud_base 921600

It's currently up and running at 230400 with my Zoom 2849 modem.

Don't forget to reconfigure anything else that uses the modem, e.g. stuff
in /etc/ppp/options and other places.

Don't know if they're still doing this but on the Acer Aspire P120 I
bought a couple years ago came with NO cache memory. I guess Acer
thinks having cache memory is an option...

BTW - Linux works great on it.

I have a nice Slack 3.6 install, still using the default 2.0.35 kernel,
running with a K6/233 on a VIA MVP3 chipset motherboard. There are two
DIMM slots, four SIMM slots, 1 AGP, 3 PCI, and 3 ISA, but I don't know
the exact specification number of the motherboard. Now, I had one 64
megabyte DIMM (PC100 SDRAM) in, and it worked fine. Then I added
another, identical, and the BIOS found it, but Linux still only sees 64
megs. Actually, it sees maybe one meg more than it did with 64 physical
in, but it is not seeing the 131072K that it should. I have searched for
the proper kernel parameter to specify how much RAM you have, but
couldn't find it. If someone could inform me of possibly BIOS settings
or kernel parameters to make it find all the RAM, I would be greatly

I just installed RedHat 6.0 on my brand new Gateway machine and cannot
get the mouse to work at all. As far as I can tell, it is a normal PS/2
mouse on IRQ 12 (I've tried with both a Logitech Trackman Marble and an
MS IntelliMouse and gone through all the protocols for each of them) and the
kernel appears to recognize it when booting.
However, if I start gpm or X, the keyboard locks up as soon as I touch
the mouse/trackball. Strangely enough, it unlocks if I try to take the
computer to standby mode.
Even stranger is that - using the adapter that came with the mouse - I can
connect it to ttyS1 and have it work perfectly as a serial Microsoft mouse.
As I normally have my smart card reader on that port and no other free
serial ports though, I'd really like to be able to get the PS/2 connection
to work.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to get it to work?

I have noticed a lot of talk about the fact that there is currently no

I'm asking this question because I've seen a couple posts where people say
they heard about a "compatable driver", and because people have actually
reverse engineered drivers for other printers like the 7000. Has anyone
done this for the 3200, or do you know what this compatable driver might be

I'm working on getting my Sound Blaster AWE 64 PnP to work on Linux
2.0.36 but I'm
running into trouble getting isapnp to run without showing errors.

Here's my /etc/isapnp.conf file:

### BEGIN ###

(READPORT 0x020b)
(ISOLATE PRESERVE)
(IDENTIFY *)
(VERBOSITY 2)
(CONFLICT (IO FATAL)(IRQ FATAL)(DMA FATAL)(MEM FATAL)) # or WARNING

  (DMA 0 (CHANNEL 1))

  (IO 0 (SIZE 16) (BASE 0x0220))
  (IO 1 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0330))
  (IO 2 (SIZE 4) (BASE 0x0388))
 (NAME "CTL009e/218399158[0]{Audio }")
  (ACT Y)
))

(CONFIGURE CTL009e/218399158 (LD 1

#     ANSI string -->Game<--
  (IO 0 (SIZE 8) (BASE 0x0200))
 (NAME "CTL009e/218399158[1]{Game }")
  (ACT Y)
))

(CONFIGURE CTL009e/218399158 (LD 2
#     ANSI string -->WaveTable<--
  (IO 0 (SIZE 4) (BASE 0x0620))
  (IO 0 (SIZE 4) (BASE 0x0A20))
  (IO 0 (SIZE 4) (BASE 0x0E20))
 (NAME "CTL009e/218399158[2]{WaveTable }")
  (ACT Y)
))

(WAITFORKEY)

### END of isapnp.conf ###

This is the output of running isapnp:
# isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
/proc/bus/pci/devices not found, so PCI resource conflict not checked
Board 1 has Identity e6 0d 04 81 b6 9e 00 8c 0e: CTL009e Serial No

CTL009e/218399158[1]{Game }: Port 0x200; --- Enabled OK
/etc/isapnp.conf:343 -- Fatal - resource conflict allocating 4 bytes of
IO at 620 (see /etc/isapnp.conf)
/etc/isapnp.conf:343 -- Fatal - Error occurred executing request
'<IORESCHECK> ' --- further action aborted

There seems to be a conflict at the port 0x620 (or port 0xA20, 0xE20 if
I swap
the entries so that that entry comes first in isapnp.conf) but I can't
figure
out how to fix it. The files /proc/ioports and /proc/interrupts do not
list any entries
using these ports/irqs. Is there some other way to figure out what
might also be
involved in the conflict (if that's the case)?

I went ahead and compiled a kernel following the Sound Blaster AWE 32/64

Mini HOWTO after commenting out the 3 wavetable I/O port entries in
isapnp.conf

running modprobe after reboot resulted in:
# modprobe -a sound
/lib/modules/2.0.36/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol unload_awe
/lib/modules/2.0.36/misc/sound.o: unresolved symbol attach_awe

I verified that the values I used are the same as those I got from
Windows95. I'm can't seem to figure out the problem that's preventing
me from
getting the card to work so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Subject: After install, RH5.2 claims "fs iso9660 not supported by kernel"

This is joke, right?

I did a standard RH5.2 install (kernel v 2.0.36) from a CD.
Everything went smoothly, but now any attempt to mount the CD (using
either mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom or mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom
/mnt/cdrom) fails with the message

"fs iso9660 not supported by kernel"

This is unbelievable! It's the same drive that was used to install
from!

Any ideas?

I was wondering if there is anyone here in Oahu that would be interested
in starting some sort of Linux users group. If so let me know.

Subject: RAM problems

Hi all!

I have just reinstalled the Linux on my machine
and to my surprise found that it recognizes only 14Mb
out of 32Mb of my RAM. It was pretty fine before re-installation
and only change in configuration I made was switching
RAM slots (they were too close to CPU).
BIOS does detect 32Mb and so does my old
windows rescue disk.
I'm running crazy, because with this amount of
RAM it takes me about 60 minutes to compile
the 2Mb program.

It should not be something hard, but I have
no idea what to do.

Thank you in advance!
Art

I used Boot Magic to boot NT/hda1, w98/hda3, BeOS hda2, and linux hda6.
The MBR points to the Boot Magic files on hda3, and it basically uses
pqboot to reset the active partition [tho not in the case of hda6]. It
did not seem to care what filesystem was on the partition designated for
boot, and did not use up a partition like Boot mangaer did.
