if RH Linux, try sndconfig to reconfigure the sound. If not, see if you
haven't checked the compile as module for the sound card in xconfig. If
so, make the module and install it (not sure of how in the syntax) or
recompile a new kernel with integration of sound into. If this doesn't
work hope some guru is hanging around because I see nothing more, I'm
also a newbie.
Hope this helps.

Have you tried adding
load printers = yes
to the global parameters? This will load all printers defined in your
printcap file. It will inherit the global security and guest account info
defined in the global parameters.

Hi, I'm running 2.2.5 kernel on a PC with ESS 1887 sound card. I start with
running sndconfig. Autoprobe doesn't find the card, and the closest suggested
match to my card is ESS 1868. Does it mean ESS 1887 is not currently supported?
What should I do?

I'll post chipset makes/model/numbers when I get back home to it.

The config option was the one for APM (I used "make menuconfig" for
configuring the kernel so I don't remember it's exact name) it's just the
main one that also gives you the other apm options.

The error was when booting the new kernel. It starts up normally, priting the
usual lines, then It hangs between printing a line about "hda" and where it
would print a line about "hdc", which is a cdrom. I'll transcribe it and post
it later.

There is no "error message" as such, it just hangs.

Ok, ok, I'm new to all of this. I've helped a few friends set up linux on
their machines (mostly RedHat) and now I'd like to make my own linux box. I've
got a PowerMac4400/200 and will hopefully be upgradign to a new G3 laptop
sometime in the not too distant future.

I've been keeping up with the development of MkLinux (www.mklinux.apple.com),
and i was wondering if anyone out there has tried it and liked/hated it and if
you all know something that Apple and the Open Group don't.

MAIN QUESTIONS:
        1. Will it run on both machines?
        2. What's the free disk space requirements?
        3. Anyone have any good shareware or freeware partitioning utilities for the
Mac? I've been searching some sites as well as AOL and haven't found jack.
        4. How's the install? Should I expect to be up for 3 weeks straight just
getting it to boot?

Yes. Use XFree86 3.3.3-1 and you'll get good 2D support "out of the
box". For 3D acceleration under Mesa you'll need to download and build
Mesa 3.* and a certain GLX module. See
http://lists.on.openprojects.net/glx/g200-faq.html for instructions.

I'm running Mesa 3.1beta2 and a two-week-old version of the GLX module,
and I get accelerated displays in an X window that run about 3 times as
fast as an unaccelerated display. The GLX is advertised as "alpha", but
I haven't spotted any problems with it yet. I've left some of my
animated programs running for c. 12 hours at a time. The developers are
working on "faster, faster, faster!" right now.

Brian,

Really depends on whether the print server is running a BSD-style printing
daemon. To test, you could do the following:

telnet <print server> 515

If you get "connection refused," then there is probably nothing listening
on that port (the BSD printing port) and you'll have to find some software
from Intel to setup your printing. Another route would be if the other
machines had a BSD printing daemon, you could set up a print queue to one
of them and let it (the other machine) forward the request on.

Good luck!

Subject: Laserwriter IIf, configure serial port with linux
Date: 3 Jun 1999 05:09:35 GMT

Okay, I have the following interesting problem:

I got a hold of one of these babies for $60 from a surplus sale at my
company (what a steal!). Anyways, I'm trying to configure the
serial connection with seemingly no real success so I can give it
to a friend of mine.

My current setup is:

Panasonic KXP-5400 connected via appletalk bridge. I'm accessing it via
netatalk on my server.

I have been able to contact and print to the laserwriter IIf through this
bridge no sweat.

I have a serial cable, a modem cable with a null modem adapter.

I've used the following string to set the printer (pulled this off teh net)

serverdict begin 0 exitserver
statusdict begin 25 57600 71 setsccbatch
end

This configures it to 57600/Hardware flow/mark parity/8 data bits/1 stop bit

The problem is that when I boot my working computer to windows and try to
print, the light will flash but nothing will print. After a couple times
sending to the serial port it doesn't accept files. But when I try to
access it via the appletalk port again it reports a busy signal because
of the serial port, then allows the appletalk send. (I have the appletalk
hooked up to my server at the same time the serial port is hooked up to
my working computer).

The fun part: boot into linux on my second box, I diddle with the serial
ports. Can get something to print, but after that file it chokes.

What I want to know is: What are the values for the above parameters
so I can diddle with the serial connection. I figure something might
be wrong with this...

A better question is: does anyone have an init string and windows
port settings that work with the modem cable/null modem adapter I'm
using?

Or is this printer busted with the serial port?

Thanks!

Hi

I'm in the process of configuring my own kernel. I'm using RedHat 6 and
need to reconfigure the kernel to suport scsi, parallel ports, and zip
drivers so that I can install my zip 250 parallel drive.

I've selected the options I want in xconfig .. and have typed "make
dep", then "make clean" and then "make zImage" but then after it has
looked at the sectors of my HD it comes up with two error messages
saying " Use bzImage or modules". I took the advice and ran "make
xconfigure" with very few y options and after the rest of the procedure
the error message came up again. It takes about a whole morning to do
the process and so I was wondering if it was possible to see the amount
of bytes used in the kernel by the different drivers.. and hence know
how much I can add without going over the kernel size limit??

Or does anyone know were to find xconfig lists that display the drivers
installed and produce a working kernel?

thanks for your time.

How reliable are the connections? As in does the modem disconnect randomly?
And how long do you normally leave your computer connected.

And I kinda want to stick with an internal due to the fact that while
external modems offer considerable advantages, I don't want a serial port
taken up (I need them for other things). But, now that I think of it. . .
My nephew has a spare serial card laying around. . .

I'd have to think about getting an external.
