Subject: SuSE 6.1 and SCSI tape device names ???

I recently installed SuSE6.1 and wanted to back up my
installation to a SCSI Travan 4 tape drive. I looked
in the /dev directory for stX devices and found
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 0 Apr 14 22:14 st0
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 96 Apr 14 22:14 st0a
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 32 Apr 14 22:14 st0l
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 64 Apr 14 22:14 st0m

Note, each device has a different minor number. I was wondering
if this is similar to Solaris or HP-UX and that the different
minor numbers represented different capacities? Such as:
l - low
m - medium
a - ???
and the base st0 was what ever the tape device could handle?

Anybody who knows the answer please let me know.

TIA,
J.M.

Then go out and buy an inexpensive CD burner. They are available for under $200 for
an ide model, and you can't get cheaper media.
That's not to mention all the other uses they have. (DAT really bites on my car CD
player...)

You have to remember that on celery the cache is running faster (with the cpu)
whilst on the P2 it's running on the bus speed. So the real difference isn't
really large.

And then, you can overclock the celery _much_ more...

Hello, I've got problems burning CDR's with cdrecord.

my config :
-cdrecord 1.6.1
-writer : TEAC CD-R55S 1.0N
-SCSI host : TEKRAM 390 (fast SCSI 2)
-kernel : 2.0.35, with sg support...
-distribution : RedHat 5.1

the SCSI adapter is ok with other devices, with reading CD's with the
CD-writer...

The problem : when issuing the cdrecord command, after recognizing the
drive, sending some commands, I get :

Executing 'write_teac_g1' command on Bus 0 Target 3, Lun 0 timeout 40s
CDB: 2A 00 FF FF FF 6F 00 00 1F 80
Blocks total: 359849 Blocks current: 359849 Blocks remaining: 21870
cdrecord: Memory could not be allocated.. Cannot send SCSI cmd via ioctl

'free' indicates that there are more than 20 Mb RAM available, + >90Mb
in swap...
Did someone got the same problem ? or have any idea ?
I can send the complete output of cdrecord with -v and -V verbose flags,
if necessary.

thanks a lot

I think people might have confused disk drives with devices. There is a 16
SCSI disk drive limit due to the requirement of specifying both drive number
and partition number in a single byte. But the kernel limit on overall SCSI
devices and SCSI CDROMS is 256. There is a document in the source tree that
explains this, and the source itself of course. Your real CDROM expansion
limit will be determined by how many SCSI controllers you can install in the
system, although the new fibre channel support may allow getting around that.

I'm running that particular card at home right now on RH 6.0. You'll need to use
the XFree86_SVGA driver. Here's a necessary question for you- how did you get to
the point where using this card is an issue? What I mean is- did you have a linux
system running, and then decide to add a new graphics card, or did you want to
make try Linux on a new system that had this graphics card, or something else?

I can give you very specific advise and instructions on how to install the card,
but I'll need more information about which distribution of Linux you're using, as
well as answers to the above question.

It's not really hard to get this working, and it might even go quite simply,
depending on your situation.

What version of mt are you using? My old Slackware came with two versions,
a non-gnu one that was the default, and a gnu one ("mt-gnu") that actually
supported the fsf argument. I don't remember if the default one choked giving
an error on "mt fsf" or if it just exited quietly without doing anything.

There's none. Creative kindly gave us a binary-only driver, compiled

Does it print colour correctly? I've noticed with the version of
Ghostscript that comes with RH 6.0 does not seem to have correct colours
with the Stylus Color 600.

Actually, it's Ghostscript that does the conversion from PostScript files
into something the printer handles. The filter takes the data and
converts it (or calls a convertor program) into something Ghostscript can
handle.

Closer, but not quite.

The Celeron L2 cache does run at CPU speed, but the P2 L2 cache runs at 1/2
CPU speed, not bus speed. That difference pretty well neutralizes any
advantage of the P2's larger cache.

A significant item not mentioned so far is bus speed. Non-overclocked
Celerons all run the bus at 66MHz. Most P2s and all P3s run the bus at
100Mhz. But most overclocked Celerons run at 100Mhz bus speed as well.

Between the two, I'd go with the Celeron. Especially if I were interested
in overclocking. P2s have pretty poor price/performance and P3s are a
total joke IMHO.

My biases? I went with AMD, since I'm no big fan of Intel. A K6-3 (256k
CPU speed L2 cache, 100MHz bus, and L3 cache on the motherboard) is a better
choice than either Intel in my book.

It really depends on what you're doing. For programs that don't need
more than 128k of level2 cache, the celeron is actually faster since
the cache is running at full core speed rather than 1/2 speed (as
all PII's do). Personally, I'd use a celeron and spend the $150 you'd
save on an additional 128mb of SDRAM.

is a D-Link DFE-530TX. D-Link says I must use the Via-Rhine chipset,
which I did. I think that its just a matter of detection. Since I
jumped from 2.0.36 to 2.2.5, there are many more options in the config

For the explanation of the bits 5, 6, and 7 see the file:

  /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/README.st

There's standing that root may "program" some default modes into the
tape driver. The user can use those four modes by selecting a certain
minor device number.

But what a, l, and m actually mean, I really don't know.

I only know that bit 7 (/dev/nst0) means "no-rewind".

Well, FWIW, I've got a 697C (almost the same thing),
that I've got up and running fine under OpenLinux 2.2.

Even got color going inadvertently. Couple of things
printed out in color, though I hadn't tried to print color.

I just set it up as an HP 560C, and everything works fine.
I'm sure I'm losing a bell or whistle or two by using the
older model's config, but everything seems to work great.

Good luck!

"Available: Linux driver for IBM ThinkPad ACP modem"

That's what we'll be saying if we can convince someone to write
a driver for the modem. I have been in contact with a person
(whose privacy I will protect) who may be in a position to do so,
and who thinks that it is doable.

However, they would need to be assigned to the task by their
employer. They have asked me to solicit e-mail from people
who might be interested in having such a driver. This e-mail
could be presented as proof that there is a demand for the
driver.

For the moment, please just send me email saying that you
are interested in getting such a driver. Later I will write back
to you asking you to send a longer e-mail to such-and-such
an address, explaining why it would be useful to you.

Let's hope this works,

[... snipped hardware description]

I have a much older sun 3/60, no hard disk.
but it has a network card, so I hooked it up to my local network, and it
boots NetBSD via a Linux server (an old 486).

that's not very fast (not the network, but the machine itself - a 20mhz
68020 as far as I know), but the big 19" screen is nice :-)

I installed it "raw", the harder being to understand that I had to setup
rpc.bootparamd and a put a few files on my tftp server.

of course, I recommend the hard disk if you can, qnd linux is sure more
userfriendly thant netbsd when you don't know unix very well.
