These are times for compiling Linux kernel with different CPU set:

CPU time in seconds
P2 350 416
Celeron 450 353
Celeron 550 314
Celeron 450 + P2 350 273
2*P2 350 256
Cel. 450 + Cel. 550 233
Celeron 550 + P2 350 223

FSB was 100MHz, Celerons were overclocked.

I have one of these in a Olivetti M480-20

Irwin Accutrak tape drives are not supported by any version of Linux
to my knowledge. That RHOMAT format is the problem!

  From Ftape-HOWTO -

6.3. Unsupported tape drives

  · All drives that connect to the parallel port (eg: Colorado
Trakker)

  · Irwin AX250L / Accutrak 250. (not a QIC-80 drive)

  · IBM Internal Tape Backup Unit (identical to the Irwin AX250L
drive)

  · COREtape light

HOWEVER - You could experiment with a DOS backup program such as
CPBACKUP under DOSEMU say.

Or get some info on that QIC-118/RHOMAT format and mod ftape to use
it.

Either way learn and then write the Mini Howto.

I doubt it, there is a limit to the kernel size. Other than that, I was
guessing, based on the clues at hand. First hand, no, I'm using 5.2,
but with kernel 2.2.10 and whatever it takes to make that combo work.

And, no, I don't have ftape in my self compiled kernel. Probably as a
module. As far as the advice, I'm a frustrated, not very good teacher.
Can't you tell? :-)

If linux drops bytes from a com port it will say something about buffer
overrun in the syslogs. It might help to run irqtune to get rid of this
problem.

Been using Solaris?

/usr/local is where most of the Linux products get put. I don't even
have an /opt directory on my Linux box and nothing's seemed to miss it.

Solaris uses /opt for the 'optional' packages.

OK, so I got around to upgrading from RH5.2 to RH6. All well and good,
excpet now my 8mm exebyte drive doesn't want to work. I'm running the
2.2.5 kernel with the scsi driver, generic scsi, and scsi tape compiled
in. The drive is recognized upon bootup at st0. Whenever I try to
access the device (using dd, tar, or mt) I get a message of "/dev/st0:
Device not configured." Also, /dev/st0 has the right magor:minor of

Anyone have any ideas how to get this to work again?

Date: 5 Jul 1999 22:19:41 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

First off, I'm running RH 6.0 on an AMD K6-2 400MHz platform with a
Sound Blaster Audio PCI 64D card. I'm using the ALSA drivers (didn't
have much luck with the native RH or OSS drivers).

Everything seems to be up and working for the most part, but since this
is the first time I've configured sound, I still have a few questions.

I've made some recordings using various software packages using the
line-in and my electric guitar. The recordings under Win98 seem to have
less noise than the ones under the various free linux programs I've been
using (I've downloaded and sometimes immediately discarded a lot, but the
ones I've gotten to at least record include yarec). Does this mean I
just need to play with the mixer more or is it some more obscure tuning
parameter? Granted, I'm not using a high-quality guitar cable, and the
difference in quality is my subjective ear.

Something that I noted was a little odd was that the IRQ for the sound
card according to the BIOS is 9, but /proc/pci says it's using 11. Could
that make a difference?

Also, can anyone recommend their favorite recording software, preferably
having used it with a setup similar to mine (SB PCI 64 / electric guitar
recording over line-in)?

Thanks for the feedback. But I'm a bit curious about this statement.
If I only have a single 20Gb HD partitioned up, other than raw transfer
rate, how would SCSI be superior to newest IDE ATA/66 or some such?
I an not real knowledgable about SCSI. I do know that it can run
multiple peripherals in parallel by "disconnecting" and "reconnecting"
to the SCSI bus. But, again, if I only have one HD, how would SCSI
help? Wouldn't I get queued up on disk I/O with either solution?
Does Linux work the disk cache more intelligently with a SCSI drive?

The Celeron is an interesting idea, but it limits future expandability.
Even if I start with an IDE due to cost, I can upgrade by adding
SCSI drives later. In fact, my current system has a BT-958 SCSI host
adapter in it. It connects to a SCSI CD-R drive and tape. I would most likely
"transplant" this SCSI controller and CD-R drive to the new system. Of course,
then I need to figure out how to network the old and new together so that
I can use the tape to backup both system. That's another reason I want
an second system. To learn more about networking.

In any case, thanks for the thoughts to mull over,

John

Subject: Useful little boc $35 plus ship.

I have a bunch of used HP Vectra 486-33VL desktop PEECEE to sell for
$35/each.

Useful for pared down special purpose box (trinux?)
You won't want to run GUI on these.

486-33
8meg, 2 x 72pin SIMM slots (2 x 4meg SIMM)
230meg IDE drive
HP 16bit ISA ethernet NIC (16TP) AMD chip, works with Linux
cirrus video built in (works with linux)

4 16bit ISA slots (NIC uses on of them)
PS2 mouse and keyboard conns.
2 x SP, 1 x PP
3.5" 1.44meg FDD
Keyboard (untested)
Mouse (untested)

These machines have been tested for functionality
to the extent that they boot DOS and
respond to DOS mem command and FDISK command (how I checked
memory and disk size :-)
I have not tested keyboards and mice.
Some keyboards look like $h!t and others look new (no choice)
Same for the mice.

$35 plus ship plus tax if you are in GA.
If you are in Atlanta, you can make arrangements to pick up.
$25 each if you buy a pallet of 20.

NO COD

Figure shipping from 30318 on a 30lb, 12 x 20 x 22 box.
Tell me you want one, I'll put your name on it.

I've got extra NICs for $10/each if you want to mess with FW or
routing and multiple NICs.
