Date: Sat, 10 Jul 1999 19:35:33 GMT

I am using Linux-Mandrake OS 6.0.
I am having trouble getting a proper configuration with my video display. I
am using a Philips Brillaince 151AX 15" flat panel. My video card is a sis
6326 AGP. I get a very poor video image. I have a desktop, but parts don't
display right, and it doesn't refresh right. i tried some different custom
settings for the monitor, and some worked better than others, but none was
workable.

My CPU is a K6 380 MHZ.

Thanks in advance.
Tom

There were other enhancements Intel threw into the P55C over the
P54C. I think you'll find the P55C a tad faster even neglecting
the differences in the L1 size.

Homework for Dean: Benchmark a P54C vs. a P55C with the L1 cache
disabled. I think you'll see a difference between them. It'll be
small, but still a difference. I'd do it, but I no longer have
any P54Cs. Maybe I can borrow one.

That is the number that Intel gives, but it realy depends how you count
them.
For example, Intel counts packed byte addition as being a different
instruction from packed word addition -- even though it counts the integer
(ie, non-packed) versions as being the same instruction.

Hi!
Irq3 is assigned by the kernel when booting to second serial port.
(You can check it after boot by pressing <shift + pgup> it will scroll
on boot messages)
Evidently in Windows you have resolved the conflict by having
another irq on COM2 (check it).
So, either change the jumper on card or invoke setserial to assign
irq's as you wish. (man setserial)
Good luck.
If you need more info e-mail direct, had this on my box and solved.
Stanislaw.

Don't have any information myself, but here is something on the 55s from

in addition to the FAQ's that people have mentioned, my personal
experience
(we (the university) recently purchased a CD burning machine, running
linux, which has been performing backups of school machines, as many as
20-30 disks per day)

 - stay away from smart & friendly. they take various manufacturers, and
repackage them. so it's rather difficult to know what kind of drive
   you're getting.

 - TEAC R55S - got two, both dead in the water after only a few disks.

 - YAMAHA 4416S (4x/4x/16x CDRW), $270 internal SCSI. pounded probably
close to 100 CDR's out in the past week, zero problems - highly
   reccomend it.

I had a problem with a multi-boot system (NT, W95 and Linux) although the
damage TENDED to be the other way (NT damaged). I came to the conclusion
that SOMEWHERE there may be a problem with various fdisk programs. I did
find that altering the order of the op systems on the disk helped. This only
happened on one machine and, as far as I know, the hardware was good.

which works very well with Linux. Now, i can't connect anymore with my

composes the number of my ISP correctly, then send "Expect ogin:" then
doesn't go further. Why ?! I tried with netcg, ezppp, kppp, etc., it's
always the same...
Anyone has an idea ?

I have a P2B-F with the same setup , but I have hooked up an Asus
thermistor probe to JTCPU jumper and taped it to the top of my celeron
heat sink - it reads about 12 C higher than the motherboard sensor,
using PCProbe, Hmonitor, or Motherboard Monitor.
None of these will read the on-chip CPU diode that is supposed to
exist.......

Well, a reboot got me hearing music. The sb driver seems to work now. I also
added the mpu_io address, so now I've got audio, midi and mixer drivers. At some
point I'll probably want 16 bit support. The card supposedly support MSS also, so
I might try using that instead. Anyone with some tips on that please let me
know.

The modular sound drivers are such an improvement over recompiling the kernel.
Although it took several hours to get this working!

While Linux could certainly use 64 meg of RAM you will find that it runs
well on more modest machines. I have a 133 mhz P1 (purchased used)
with 24 meg of Ram that works very nicely. Much better than when
windows was installed and run on it. That doesn't mean that its a
barn burnner but it certainly ouperforms Win 95 that was originally
installed.

If your going the new route, which the voice of ezperience reccomends, I
would suggest getting verification from somebody else that the
distribution you intend to install is compatiable. If you feel
confident in your abilities you could just test everything out your
self.

I'm using Redhat 6.0 but you might want to consider the Mandrake
distribution thats targeting pentiums. I've found that recompiling
certain parts of the redhat distribution can have a very positive impact
on performance. In my case I saw a large increase in speed form the
Python environment. Take into account the limited machine we are
talking about here. The fact of the matter is that Linux works so
well on my laptop that I removed all of the MS software.

Of course true.
My personal experience:
the close-to-BIOS benchmark H2bench shows a interface transfer rate of
31 MB/s for my Promise Ultra 33 controller in DOS-mode.
If I use the onboard controller of my P5A, it shows "IBM DJNA 37910,
UDMA" while booting. But the measured interface transfer rate is only
14.5 MB/s, so there is *no real UDMA support* in DOS mode ! The Ali
EIDE-controller runs in PIO4 !

Go with the Sony VAIO line. Good laptops, and there is lots of linux
success on that line. My roomate has it going. Personally, having just
installed Linux on a Presario 1260, I would say that Compaq isn't the
most friendly company when it comes to their laptops. They wouldn't even
provide the windows drivers for this thing so that I could reinstall
Win98 my own way without the crap. Too bad really, but I got it running
and am now in the process of trying to get sound and modem on it going.
Everything else seems ok. If you pick a model with the NeoMagic 128
chipset though, be careful as there is little X support for this due to
NeoMagic's stubborness with the drivers. It uses the SVGA server with
moderate success. Good luck.
