I'm Linux-newbie just like you and I just started working with the Internet,
but when I bought my USR 56k external faxmodem I simple installed it and now
I have no problems. My model's number is 5630.
I'm from Poland and I paid for it about 150$. I know that it's a lot of
money, but it's really good ane and all USRs are just like it.
If you have any problems with setting it up - mail me - I'll try to help you,
if I could.
One advise: DON"T BUY AN INTERNAL MODEM !!!

Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 21:39:10 GMT

I´d like to install Linux on my Portégé 300 CT.

But the Toshiba web site doesn´t have any info, drivers, etc.

Can someone put me in the right direction?

Is there anybody here with the same notebook using Linux?

Should I stop and find another brand/model of notebook.

I´d really appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance

Your termination is incorrect. Set the AHA1542 card to "termination enabled"
and make sure that your SCSI HD is terminated as well.

You are correct in that it is a "winprinter." Though HP has apparently
been uncooperative, there's a guy out there who's reverse engineered
the standard as best as he could apparently from the open
literature. His URL is http://www.httptech.com/ppa/. His driver
(actually a translator that hangs off the end of ghostscript) only
works in B/W, but does a pretty good job at that.

Noticed something odd on Linux webserver. When you go into Fdisk on the
second hard drive and go into expert mode, All partitions past cylinder 1024
are being read as overlapping. Is this normal. Everything can be accessed
just fine. Thanks in advance for the help.

Just to chime in with a "me too", a system running
at one my client's sites starting exhibiting spontaneous
reboots after an upgrade from RH 5.2 to 6.0. I was
unable to reproduce the error manually, but it
happened often enough that they decided to downgrade
to RH 5.2 again (the client needed a functioning server
and didn't want to pay me to debug Linux problems).

The one thing I noticed in common with your setup was
the 3c59x driver (3Com 3C905B Cyclone 100baseTX).
I noticed some very weird behavior with the network
card under RH 6.0. The link light would come and
go almost randomly, and network connectivity came
and went with it.

I tried all of the following but the flaky network
behavior and reboots still happened with the 6.0
install (stock kernel 2.2.15-15):
.. swapping the NIC card with another of the same model
.. replacing the network cable
.. trying several different network drops
.. swapping the hard drive and video card into
another machine (with same model NIC)

Too bad I didn't have time to ferret out the
exact problem, but I figured I'd post here to
bear witness to the fact that some sort of bug
may exist that is causing the reboot behavior we
both experienced.

Since the downgrade to 5.2 everything looks fine.
The link light on the card stays on all the time
and they haven't had any problems.

You might perhaps want to contact the author of the HiSax driver,
Karsten Keil, directly. He's the specialist as far as Siemens
chipsets are concerned. Try [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

I _finally_ figured out the order I have to manually insmod modules to
get the CD to mount without the OOPS 0002. What I really want to know
is what I have to put in the /etc/conf.modules to make this happen
automagically when I issue the mount command, just like my parallel port
zip drive does. The order I have to load them in now is: cdrom,
ide-cd, isofs, udf. Even better would be to get the SCSI drivers to
work on this CD, since it is a Ricoh 7040A CD-RW, so I could write to
it. Then the last thing would be to have the drive seen as read-write,
not just read-only. I have tried different flags when I mount, but none
will change it from mounting it as a read-only device. Any help there
also would be appreciated. BTW, its SuSE 6.1; kernel 2.2.7.

Except those USRs which are winmodems..

150 bucks for a modem!..
This money buys 4 "really good anes" internal modems of the same quality.

dhcpd is complaining that you don't have a subnet declaration for your
external network. So, the solution is to give it a subnet declaration, but
don't list any addresses that it should serve:

        subnet 24.2.252.0    netmask 255.255.254.0 {
        }

Sorry if this has been asked before. Allegedly, Xfree86 3.3.4
included support for the S3 Trio3D chip, but it doesn't work for me.
Has anyone else gotten these to work together? Was the Trio3D support
perhaps pushed back into 3.3.5?

No luck with 3.9.1.5 and the Trio3D either.

I hope there never will be any! Cases are so cheap that they will make a
minor addition to the price of a K7/MoBO combination. You will also need
new RAM: IIRC the 'good' boards will run Rambus-DRAM, with a
SDRAM-2-RAMBUS bridge, so you can use that, too, but you will not be
able to use EDO!

Hi there,

I can't seem to get UDMA to work on my Asus P5A-B MB. I'm running Linux
2.2.10. I've tried Linux 2.3.7 to no avail. Is there anyone who can show
me a patch in the ALI driver or something?

Thanks in advance,
