What timezone did you set, and have you set
BIOS to GMT?

set the correct timezone with (or check your start
scripts):

tzconfig

There's probably a way I don't know about, but without using lilo, I don't
know of any other way except changing the kernel driver source. I'd say
installing lilo is the best way to go; you can use it boot different linux
kernels, ie, add a stanza to lilo.conf to boot your latest custom kernel in
test mode, so you can easily go back to your orignal kernel if something
doesn't work right.

Assuming there are no conflicts between the two NICs, you can add the line:

append = "ether=9,0x360,eth1"

to the right section of lilo.conf and you should be in business. The same
thing (without the quotes) will work from the LILO: boot prompt. Just don't
specify the first ethernet card (eth0); you only need to specify the ones
beyond the first one.

I'm going to be upgrading from a VLB based Motherboard and Pentium 133 upgrade

Will I have to reinstall Linux or just reconfigure XWindows with

Don't take my word for it, I was just assuming. Maybe there is a
conflict between the source and the SMP header files.

Alright, I'm in a pickle...here's the situation: I juat got a new PII
with a built in SCSI DAT 3 tape drive. I recompile the kernel (2.2.10) to
include SCSI tape support. I reboot with the new kernel and nothing. I
can't access the tape drive (atleast not through /dev/st0 or /dev/nst0).
Is there something I am doing wrong or forgetting? For what it's worth,
the SCSI card is a Adaptec 2940U2W. This is something that I realy need
to get working so any help woulf be much apriciated. Thanks.

Is this the sort of performance I'm supposed to get? The delay roughly
doubles from 1 disk to 2 disks, and even more so from 1 disk to 3 disks (btw,
the 2,3 disk runs were launched simultaneously to the background via a shell
script). This was run on a 2.2.10 kernel, on 3 identical 9GB scsi disks.

Try checking out this web page:

        http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/

The short answer is: In your X config, use "imps/2" as the mouse protocol.
This should work in recent X distributions.

Unless you're going to some other video chipset, you probably won't

I'm a Linux newcomer. Just built a 2.2.10 kernel. I long had this question
in head: If everything can be built into modules (except those critical to
system boot), why would one prefer an "N" to an "M"? By specifying sth as
modules, will it increase kernel size +/or its memory footprint? If not,
why not saying "M" to everything except those needed to bootup, so that the
resulting kernel is omnipotent?

I have recently been trying to make use of my 4mm SCSI DAT drive under LINUX
using TAR. The SCSI chain I use is fine under Windows (no termination
troubles).

The drive is recognised by my host adapter (Adaptec 2940) and TAR will attempt
(and seems) to backup to the device.

However, when I try to restore I get a few problems. The restore seems to
"freeze" quite often during the restore.

The entire backup set on the DAT tapes never seem to come back during restore
(even using brand new tapes of a different make).

Am I using an incorrect block size perhaps?

Any help appreciated.

I've got the same problem with my Sony VAIO F160 - the chipset is calles
NeomagicAV256
and it CAN emulate SB16, WSS, ...and a lot more. The problem is (as far
as I know) that the
BIOS of your computer must keep an IRQ free for the emulation (e.g. 5
for SB). This works
with my Tecra8000 fine - but the Sony (Phoenux BIOS) doesn't features
this. I also heart
about that the Siemens Scenic work with that emulation to (-> iX :
www.heise.de/ix). But
naitive support for the AV256 is not available (Neomagic mails: we think
about a linux driver ...)
- the OSS doesn't provide any help either.

hope that helps

This warning message could happen at "Fdisk" during the installation of
Linux operation system .
1). If you need to use Linux "fdisk" to partition your SCSI hard disk,
you would have to "fdisk" with DOS utility to make one "DOS partition"
first. This is due to the fact that Linux fdisk utility may use that
disk parameter (C/H/S) made by DOS partition and then further
partititon your SCSI disk.
2). If you won't do as suggested as the above, i.e., to create a DOS
partition first, you may also get the correct SCSI disk parameters
during DC-390's SCSI BIOS display and then manually key in these
parameters during your FDISK under Linux. .
The following are some more regarding how you operate the FDISK under
Linux:
++++++++++++++++++++++++
[ The number of cylinders for this disk is set to "xxxx".
This larger than 1024, and may cause problems with :
(1) software that run at boot time (e.g.,LILO)
(2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g.,DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
 ]
++++++++++++++++++++++++

After seeing the above message during performing FDISK under Linux, you
could use command "x" to enter the extra functionality (experts only) .

In "experts only" mode you will be asked to manually set the correct
SCSI disk parameters (C/H/S).
* Key in the disk parameters that you get from DC-390's BIOS display
during bootup.

There's lots of ways to skin this cat. See the man page for dd. The
following should work.

dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/tmp/floppy.img bs=1024 count=1440
dd if=/tmp/floppy.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=1024 count=1440

The file floppy.img will contain a byte for byte image of your floppy
disk. You can make multiple copies by simply executing the second
command again. You should delete /tmp/floppy.img when you're finished.
