I installed a hard drive (1.2 Gb Conner IDE, fat32 formated). When I
first started linux, I had a PANIC! message and the computer hanged
during the random generator init. After that, I got a crc error during
the kernel uncompacting. When I remove the HD, everything seems to work
fine. And the same problem appears when I put it back (crc error).

Please help me

I recently upgraded my kernel from 2.2.5-15 to 2.2.10. When I used the old
one, in lilo.conf I had vga=791 to set my console to 1024*768 resolution.
After installing the new kernel, this caused a blank screen after typing
linux at LILO. I booted the old kernel and changed this to vga=ask and
when I scan for available types, it doesn't show any ones that are of the
same resolution. Can anyone help? I'm wondering why a certain vga value is
supported in the old kernel but doesn't work in the new one.

Re-enable native ATAPI support in your kernel, leave IDE-SCSI compiled in a=
s=20
well, and have in your /etc/lilo.conf:

append=3D"hdc=3Dide-scsi"

Your ZIP drive will then return to being /dev/hdd.

In your kernel compile, disable 'Probe all LUNs'.

I have a Wangtek 5150ES scsi tape drive, its mounted as
SCSI-ID 6 on my Linux system (Slackware 3.9, Kernel 2.0.27pre10. This
problem has always been here. even from slackware 3.1! so I know its
not a new problem.
When I use the rewinding Scsi /dev/st0 device I can backup to
tape fine and dandy. but if I want to ADD a new valume after that one
with /dev/nst0 all hell breaks loose! heres a small example
pinkrose:~# tar -cvf /dev/st0 /etc/lilo.conf
tar: Removing leading `/' from absolute path names in the archive
etc/lilo.conf
pinkrose:~# mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf
pinkrose:~# tar -cvf /dev/nst0 /bin/bash
tar: Removing leading `/' from absolute path names in the archive
bin/bash
st0: Error with sense data: extra data not valid Current error
st09:00: sense key Illegal Request
tar: Cannot write to /dev/nst0: I/O error
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
st0: Error with sense data: extra data not valid Current error
st09:00: sense key Illegal Request
st0: Error on write filemark.

Does the Scsi st.o driver have a problem with a Wangtek 5150es
drive using more than one volume? I don't have a manual for a 5150es
so I cannot tell if this is a problem inherent with the drive or the
software itself. Could someone tell me what the story with this drive
is? It does fsf without a fit. seek and tell work from mt too. as
does rewind and retension.
Related to this. how do I physically REFORMAT Scsi tapes? I
have a few that their formats are muffed up and a mt -f /dev/st0 erase
does NOT fix. I really wish someone write a SCSI-tape-HOWTO!!
After you copy a volume to tape. how do you findout how much
ROOM is left? I had problems with multiple volume tar tapes on both my
Wangtek and my Ditto 800 (floppy based tape unit). tar reads back
first tapes dandy. its the second and third tapes that get out of sync
with first tape. Do I need to specify tape length in tar????
PLEASE HELP ME FIND THESE ANSWERS. WEB PAGES, MAILLED COPYS OF
WANGTEK MANUALS.... ANYTHING!!!!!

Very good mouse. I have one PilotMouse and one PilotMouse+ (the middle
button is a scroll wheel), and I prefer the plain one. Nice feel to
it, and unlike most modern mice, it can be used by a lefthanded
person.

I've Logitech 2button+1wheel mouse. The wheel can act as 3rd button without any
problem. Logitech Pilot mouse = Logitech MouseMan+ (elsewhere in the world other
than Europe), so I guess it should work just fine.

I think SCSI tape support is compiled into the kernel, not as a module.
The RH init scripts are supposed to detect that and not load the st
module. Which leads me to wonder if you are really booting the default
kernel. What does a "uname -r" give you?

Dunno where you heard that, but I'm using a 2940U with a 9-GB Seagate
drive without any problems.

That's the setup I use. Both cards can safely co-exist. The folks at
Aureal
(makers of the chips on the MX300) are one of the companies that are
afraid
to release the programming details of their chips, so the Linux
community
has been unable to get the proper drivers done for these cards. I guess
only
companies that have well-designed hardware and confidence in their
products
can afford to cooperate with the open-source software community. Any
company
that has poor products that require software work-arounds and hacks
can't
afford to show their source code...people would see how internally messy
the stuff is.

Hi

I have a Digital HiNote VP710 and upgraded to 80MB RAM. Now I'm=20
wondering, whether this amount of memory is still cached? From the=20
specs it's not absolutely clear, how much 2nd level cache it has. It's=20
almost certain that's only 256kb.

Host bridge: Intel 82439TX (rev. 1)
Bridge: Intel 82371AB PIIX4 ISA (rev 1)

Something about Intel chipsets was bad earlier, they couldn't cache=20
more than 64mb. Probably this also happens on my computer??

Thanks for any hints

Yes, it's selected. I even toggled it, what was suggested in User's
Manual. I think I'll borrow DAT from somewhere, backup the
whole system and try to do everything from scratch. If even that don't
work, I'll just leave it be.

I haven't try if I could get rid of the warning with
FreeBSD, which is currently on my IDE drive, but I probably
test the drive with that too.

Thanks, for everyone for their help. Still, if some one
has any suggestions, I'm willing to try them.
