    I have a SDT-S9000 Sony's DAT unit, and I'm running Red Hat 5.2,
kernel 2.2.10. I just want to made compressed backups. I've tried
mt -f /dev/st0 defcompression 1
and
mt -f /dev/st0 compression 1
but it didn't work.

Has someone a suggestion?

I just got my STB TV PCI working (sound and all) by grabbing the latest
bttv, compiling, and going into the driver subdirectory and editing the
"update" script so that it ends with the following:

xinsmod videodev
xinsmod i2c verbose=1 scan=1 i2c_debug=0
test -f i2c_chardev.o && xinsmod i2c_chardev
xinsmod tuner debug=0 type=2
xinsmod msp3400 debug=0 simple=0
xinsmod tda8425
xinsmod tea6300
xinsmod bttv radio=1 card=3 pll=1

I just run this modified update script on startup and the tv tuner works
like a charm!

Midi works great on mine, but then I use OSS Sound. It comes free
with SuSE. SuSE 6.2 should be out in the next couple of days
according to a EMAIL I got from SuSE tonight. Just make sure you
get the ISA card so it will work with the free OSS driver.

I paid $34 for a brand new card at A2Z. They're in Ohio and I got
my card after a couple of days.

I would guess that unless you use the dma66 -driver- for linux, you
will only get regular ide/dma33 out of that controller. ie, it
probably is backwards compatible and you're just using it as an extra
ide controller.

WITH the kernel patch, you have a chance of using dma66. else its dma33, I would
guess.

Does anybody out there have any kind of drivers for the DTV 1100 portion
of the Diamond Stealth64 2001TV Tuner card? I'd prefer Video 4 Linux
drivers, but anything I can get my hands on would be a start.

Also, is there any off chance that drivers for another card would work
with this one, bearing in mind that the card was probably produced when
Diamond was hell-bent on non-disclosures?

Any kind of information would be helpful.

I have the same problem with my TNT which is virtually unsupported with
Q3test so far... I am using libGL.so. drivers in place of the mesaVoodoo
driver supplied with the game. I don't get errors anymore, it just starts
into a black screen (fullscreen) and I have to force quit Gnome to get out
of it... I'm not using Glide drivers as the TNT only supports openGL, not
Glide. Please correct me if I am wrong on this.

The card works beautifully in Win98. OpenGl setup did a good job with it.

Subject: Acer CDRW 6206 : problems at boot
Date: Wed, 18 Aug 1999 03:13:53 GMT

I'm totally stuck! I installed a new Acer CDRW 6206A drive in my
Mandrake Linux 6.0 system. Now I get a strange message at boot:

hda: Maxtor 86480D6, ATA DISK drive
hdb: WDC AC31600H, ATA DISK drive
hdc: no response (status = 0xd0), resetting drive
hdc: CRW6206A, ATAPI CDROM drive

I have two hard drives on the IDE0 bus. The CDRW is the Master of the
IDE1 bus with no slave drive. This is not a problem by itself because
the CDRW works as a conventional CDROM once the system is booted.
However, I also have a fast Acer CD-ROM that I want to use as the slave
on IDE1. When I plug it in, the kernel gives the same error message and
doesn't even recognize that the CDROM exists. When I try to mount the
CD-ROM, I get the message:

mount: /dev/hdd is not a valid block device

I think the hardware connection is valid because, surprisingly enough,
all the drives actually work and play well together under Windows! Does
anybody have any idea how to make two hard drives, one CDRW, and one
CDROM all work together under Linux? At this point I just want to see
the CDRW as a read-only device.

My system:
Linux version 2.2.9-19mdk ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version
pgcc-2.91.66
 19990314 (egcs-1.1.2 release)) #1 Wed May 19 19:53:00 GMT 1999
Intel Pentium II

Could this be a config problem with my Plug'n'Play BIOS? This drive is
supposed to be true ATAPI--but is it?

I've pasted in a copy of the Compaq monitor INF file. I think you'll find
what you need in there. Here's a tidbit that is probably the most useful to
you:

[MV400.AddReg]
HKR,"MODES\640,480",Mode1,,"31-48,50-75,-,-"
HKR,"MODES\800,600",Mode1,,"31-48,59-100,-,-"
HKR,"MODES\1024,768",Mode1,,"31-50,59-61,+,+"
HKR,,ICMProfile,0,"CPQMV400.icm"

The figures listed here are probably the H- and V-Sync frequency ranges at
the specified resolution.

Here's where I found it, in case you're interested:

Hope this is helpful.

Hmmm...well...do your speakers have a powered amp, or is everything
powered from the sound card? I'm running Labtec LCS-150 speakers on a
SB16 PnP. When my amp is turned off or unplugged, the sound is
unacceptably high. If I turn the amp on, I can turn the volume down nice
and low.

As to software solutions, I'm afraid I can't help you there. Sorry.

Antryg - At least, I _assume_ that wall transformer powers an amp... :)

Now I've put up a web page for information related to using HPT-366
under Linux at:

Comments, suggestions, questions, and contributions are welcome.

Try re-compiling your kernel without making the NIC modular. On some
(all?) NICs, making them modular won't work. I've got mine permanent
(and after all, I'm using them all the time anyway) and it's working
fine compiled in. I'm using PCI-based NE2000 clones.

Subject: Re: Good Digital Sound Card for Linux?
Date: Tue, 17 Aug 1999 23:57:44 -0300

I know this has been asked a lot, even by me but no one has come up with
anything yet... TB Montego II, anyone know of any drivers? OSS has a beta
for Montego but nothing for Montego II yet. I'm pretty sure there are no
specific drivers for my card anywhere but is there a generic driver that I
could use to at least get some basic sounds out of the damn thing? It is
such a beautiful sounding card under Win9x... can't wait until Linux drivers
are written for it.

Also, I can't vouch for any card specifically but I have been really happy
with turtle Beach in general, decent website, good support, beautiful sound
quality, and they seem to win lots of awards...if the Fiji is supported in
the kernel, I would say go for it without a second thought :-)

thanks,
Blake
